MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.

LABOUR CANDIDATES 'AT ISLAND BAT. Labour party municipal candidates who had arranged to hold a combined meeting in the Island Bay; Town Hall last •evening encountered a disappointment. On 'arrival at the hall they found it locked and being unable to-locate tho custodian they had to hold their meeting in the churchroom near the hall. About fifty electors attended. 'Iho first speaker was Councillor A. H. Hindmarsh, who spoke generally about the position of the United Labour party nnd also in regard to tramways finance. He said that ha did not approve of tlio alteration that had been made in fares. In his opinion the surplus .now showing had not been obtained in a right manner. Fares had been called upon to provida .£IO,OOO towards the restoration ot tlio floating renewal fund, which had been allowed to run down. Councillor E. Tregcar gavo an account of his activities in the council since being elected, at a by-election, twehe months ago. Ho remarked that ho had been unavoidably absent during a part of the year, acting as chairman of tho Cost of Living Commission, but considered that lie had served the public in that capacity. On getting back to the council, ho continued, he had taken u, stand upon several occasions. Ho had objected to tho Kelburno Bowling Club getting a part of Kelburno Park because that area belonged to the citi&cnß of Wellington and should not bo allowed to pass into private hands. Ho had objected ulso to a portion of tho Town Belt being made available for a bowling green. Tho reserves belonged-to tho citizens of Wellington, and. if the reserves were taken away aero by acre the public would soon have very littlo left. Another matter which had rcccived his attention was that: of condensation granted to injured trainwaymen. :'He ■ had Opposed tho proposal that compensation granted by tho" corporation should be debited with any, amounts received privately 1 from benefit societies. He had objected also to tho Basin Reserve beiug cut up for tramways, in view of tho few areas available for purposes of sport in Wellington. Ho had proposed that hot swimming baths should be es-> tablished in' Wellington and the council, after some delay, had adopted tho proposal. , It had assented also to his proposal that tho milk supply should be municipally controlled. Regarding markets, Mr. Trogcnr said that he had only proposed municipal market gardens in. view ofjtho difficulty experienced in connection with tho municipal fish market, in'obtaining supplies. Tlio Labour members on tlio council, Mr, Tregcar claimcil, had never proposed any extravagance and were not likely to do so. It had been asserted that they were thcro to raise wages, but tlio wages, at "all events of tho municipal labourers, were not at present up to tho rates being paid by private employers. Thcro was no reason to suppose that tho Labour councillors would do nioro than raise wages to a fair, and just level. Addresses were also delivered by Messrs.' Dalrymplc, Dobson, and Carey, and after*' wards' a number of questions w* answered. i — 1 CANDIDATES' MEETINGS. Mr. ,W.
