» — : — AN INTERESTING GATHERING. A dinner of considerable/ importancb and interest to tho farming and slieepraising settlors of tho Wairarapa was held in St. Peter's Hall, Wellington, on batuvday night. It was inaugurated by tho members of tho new Ngahaurunga and Petone Slaughtermen's linion, and tendered to tho managing stall of tho companies (Gear Meat Export Companies) and the shareholders and customers of tho aforesaid companies. There wero above 100 pea-sons present, including u number of ladies. -Tha' Wairarapa was represented by several settlers. The chair was taken by Mr.. J. P. Lulco, of Wellington. After justice was done to tho 'abundant supply of delicacies, tho chairman prdpc&ed "The King," and "Tho Parliament of New Zealand" was proposed by Mr. Milhvard, and Mr. Lulto, in responding, touched strongly on tho Labour laws, and complimented tho now union's men on tho way t'hey eamo to tho. assistance of the farmors and tho companies. Tho (east of. the guests was entrusted to Mr. Stinson, ui\d was drunk in bumpers, Messrs. Harry Kempton, Sladden, and Millwnrd responded suitably. Mr. 1 L. Kempton proposed "The Gcat and Meat Export Companies," which was groetod with loud applause. Mr. Sladden, in replying for tho Meat Export Company; spolco «t somo length of tho effects of strikes on industries and of the good cifect of tho stand made by tho present slaughtermen at tho companies' works. Mr. Millword endorsed tho previous speaker's remarks, Tho toast of "Tho Slaughtermen of Ngahaurauga and Petouo" w(\s entrusted to Mr, H. Kempton, who spoke at considerable length on tho manner.in which many of tho men had loft their homes and come to tho assistanco of the farmers and companies, in somo instances at a pecuniary los 3to themselves. Tho toast I was drunk amid hearty cheers. Messrs. Hodge, Le Feren, L. kempton, and Taj--' lor, who suitably responded, wcro also heartily cheered. Air. Dickson (manager of tho Meat Export Freezing Company) narrated tho progress of tho now sloughtermen from tho ulnrt to tho present tiino.and complimented tho men on their progress. Mr. Cj-001, chief engineer of tlio Moit Export Company, also spoko on the subject, and Mt. Loddor followed in tho same sham. Mr. Sladden proposed "Tho Farming Industry," which was responded' to by Messrs. Taylor and 11. Kempton After the toast of "Tho Ladies" and "The Chairman" wero duly ho,loured, a most enjoyublo evening was brought to a close ty singing tho /National Anthem and then "Old Lang Svne." Songs wero contributed by Messrs. nodgo, Tripe, Belcher, and Jones, and others.
