PILFERING ON RAILWAY
SUGGESTION TO DEPARTMENT, Many'complaints lmvo been made to the Auckland Chamber of Commerce with regard to pilfering, which, it is alleged,' has gone-on at some stage of the carriage of goods by rail. Tho complaints have been the subject of correspondence between tho chamber and the district trafiio, manager, and" at Friday's meeting of tho Chamber' of Commerce Council a letter from that' olficer (Mr. W. Bowles) was ; received, stating that the complaints were ' being inquired into. : Another letter was received from Mr. A. E: Webb, of Hamilton. ' The. writer stated that he was a fruit dealer, and received many consignments from both north and south. It was astounding to see how few came through unbroaehed. Ho stated that tho evil was undoubtedly increasing, and ho suggested that tho Railway Department should employ a capable official or two, to note and tabulate all complaints so as to select tho places wero tho losses ' were most frequent. Several members of the council said that tho statements in the letter appeared to bo only too well justified, and it was decided to forward a copy of tho letter to tho traffic manager. ■
