THE GORE FLOODS.
e OUTSIDE RELIEF NOT NEEDED. STATEMENT BY COMMITTEE. (By Telegraph.—Prose Association.) 1 Gore, April 13. ; Mr. Cameron, of Dunedin, supervising health inspector for Otago and Southland, who is visiting Gore, stated to an. "Ensign" representative that, somo common!, had been mado because the Department had not started sooner to enforce Iho drastic and hasty remedies which somo persons considered nccossary after tho floods, The fact was .that up till iho present most of tho individual property owners concerned and the Goro Borough Council, as tho local health authority in tho town, were carrying out successfully most of tho measures needed. Tho Department would have considered itself somewhat guilty of interforcnco with tho local authority had it token upon itself to stop in when almost everything thnt could reasonably bo expected to bo donn in tho circumstances, as regards public Jiealth provision, was undoubtedly being done. Such unnecessary interference was entirely against the policy and desires of the Department. The duty of tlio Public Health Department was to ndviso and supervise tlio public health work of tho various councils, hospital, boards, and other local authorities.' Tho Department did not itself enforce remedies in any individual cases anywhere,. unless under very exceptional instances, as such wore tho statutory duty of councils nnd boards. Mr. Cameron added that all tho conditions . found so far would' cause 110 apprehension. Tho council and tile- property owners had 'done good work regarding health precautions. Tho following statement lias been prepared for publication by tho officials of the Relief Conimittco:— ' ' Two days after the flood, on March 31, a meeting of tho Gore Borough Council was held for tho purpose, among others, of considering wluit steps should bo taken towards providing aid for tlioso who suffered by the flood and might need assistance and l relief. At the meeting a committo was set up, consisting of llio Mayor and Councillors G. W. Anderson, M.P.,-and others, with citiitens appointed as ward committors with power to add. It was decided, on tho resolution of Iho Mayor, lo open a local subscription liel;, but. that outsido assistance appeared necessary. 111 Iho meantime a list was opened and the various ward committees were requested to mako luquiries of thoso urgently requiring assistance and to report to a, meeting a. day or two later. A further meeting was hold which arranged thai all tlio clergymen in tho town and Mr. E. R. Bowler wer« appointed members of the committee. Reports were received from the Ward Committees us to their investigations, and authority was given to (110 various Ward Committees lo act at onco in terms of their reports. Sinco then tlieso committees have daily conducted investigations and taken steps lo reliovo all cases brought under their .notice. The general commiitdo mot from tiu»o to time to hear progress. All reported cases worn considered and aid given wliero nccossary, tho sum of .£125 being spent. At present;. thero is (.till nearly iIOO 011 hand, and althoush further cases of need are arising, ilie committee is c-atisfiod that the funds nccossary will easily _bo found locally, and therefore it is still of opinion thai;.outside aid is not necessary.
