Vice-Regal. After holding an Executive Council on Saturday morning, liis Excellency (ho linrl of Liverpool held ail Investiture, and presented Mr. Leonard Stowe, clerk of Parliaments, with the insignia of a Companion of tho Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George, which dignity his Majesty tho King had been pleased lo confer on him. His Excellency left for Auckland by tho Main Trunk express last, evening. All tho Cabinet Ministers aro in Wellington to-day, except Ilia Hons. ,T. Allen and F. M. B. Fisher, who aro away from New Zealand. The Hon. W. H. Ileme.l leaves for the 6outh to-night. The Prime Minister (tho Hon. W. P. Massey) lias not yet decided when he will leave on. liis visit, to the King Country. A Press Association message received from London last niglit states' that Lady Scott, widosv of Captain R. F. Scott, tho Antarctic explorer, lias arrived in London from Now Zealand, and is in good health. Major-General A. J. Godley, C.8., commandant of the New Zealand Forces, arrived in' town from tho south on Saturday evening. Mr. J. Maughan Barnett left Auckland by the express last evening for Wellington, in connection with the Wellington Choral Society's performance of "Carmen," which is to take place on. April 22. The Rev; J. lionnedy Elliott, at one fame chairman, of the Charitable Aid Board, has been persuaded to'become a candidate at the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board election on April 3u: I Mr. J./Craigie, M.P., arrived from the south by the Maori yesterday morning. Detective-Sergeant Cox, of. Auckland ■ and Detective-Sergeant Hunt, of Dunedin' aro to be transferred to fill vacancies at Chnstchurch. Mr. Harold Sparks, the well-known 6«cretary ' of the Sydney Chamber ol Manufactures,' died. on April 6, death being due to general breakdown. . Mr. Sparks for many years was secretary of the New South Wales Protectionist Association, and latterly was managing director of the' Parramatta woollen Mills, from which position ho retired somo months ago, owing to failing •liV ,vas a ' so Sir William Lynp's right-hand man in connection with the revision of tho Commonwealth tariff, when Sir William Lyne was in power. The death occurred on April 5. at his residence, St. Kilda, Melbourne,, of exJudge James Joseph Casey, C.M.G. Deceased was in his 83rd year. Ho was appointed a Judge of County Courts in 1884, occupying that position for 16' years. Mr. D. P. Brennan, of tho clerical staff of_ the Petone Railway Station, has received notification of his transfer to Hastings. Mr. Brennan will leave for Hastings on May if. 1 . ' The death took place in Sydney on April 4 of Mr. A. T. Brindloy, Assistant Government Architect of' New South Hales, at the ago of 60 years. No man (says the Sydney "Herald") was bettor known in his profession, and none 'more esteemed, than tho deceased. Ho was born in London in 1852, and served ill the offices of several leading English architects. ,Ho cuuio out lo New Zealand in 1877, and engaged in private practice in tho Dominion. Later lie entered the New Zealand Government service, and under tho supervision of .the late Mr. R. A. Lawson he assisted in the erection of somo of the largest buildings in the South Island, notably tho Seacliff Hospital for tho Insane at Dnnedin. In 1885 lie was appoilnted! to the Colonial Architects' Department of New South Wales, and up to the time of his death he was closely associated with the preparation of tho plans ' and the carrying out of a large number of important public buildings of the State, including the Central Railway Station. , Mr. J. Goring Johnston, president of the Manawatu i Racing Club, left Palmerston' on Thursday for Auckland, en route for England oh a holiday tour. Mr. Johnston expccts to return in January next. Mr, A. H. Holmes, clerk of tho Magistrate's Court, Wellington, who is a candidate for the Civil Service Appeal Board, lias been 33 years in the Magistrate's Court and for 17 years of that time was a Deputy-Registrar in the Supremo Court, In the oourse of his duties ho has acquired much experience in the preparation of and stating cases on' appeal and the procedure thereon. Mr. Holmes was a member of the Executive Committee of the Civil Service Superannuation Committee until the Bill was passed in 1907. Ho is in officer having a wide experience of the conditions under which most of the Civil Servants work, more particularly those ivho are stationed away from . headjuarters. A. 6udden death in sad circumstances jccurred at Kilbirnie on Friday night. Mrs. Piatt, wife of Mr. A.' G. Piatt, a letter-carrier, was retiring for the night ifter having, with her husband, entertained some friends during the evening. While Mr. Piatt was<at the back of the house lie heard his wife call. He rushed inside ind found her lying in tho passage. She never spoke again. During the evening >ho had appeared to be in good health. Dr. Bowerbank has stated that heart disease ivas the cause pf death. Mrs. Piatt was July 25 years of age.
