FRENCH CIRCLE.
I TIIO first regular meeting of tho French Circle, was held at tho Arts Club rooms in Mowbray Street 011 Thursday evening. Tho proceedings opened with au inaugural address from the president, Monsieur Duflou, who referred to the past work ot the, club, and congratulated Mr. W. 13. Hudson on the excellent programme .ho had prepared for the session just commencing. All interesting lecture was given by the Hon. J. lligg on the subject of "Modern English Novels." The vory depreciating views of the lecturer, who considered that the novels of tho present day wero degenerating, owing to tho influence of women authors, met with considerable opposition. Tho following members took part ill tho discussion Messrs. Hudson and Dullou and Captain Barclay; tho Misses Van Stareren and Sniythson, and Mrs. Seville. Tho proceedings wero interspersed with musical 'items, and altogether a very 1 enjoyable; evening was spent. Mr. lfigg was unanimously accordcd u. vote of thanks. ■ \ ■
