At the monthly ..meeting of the Masterton District High School Committee, tho treasurer reported a credit balanoe of .£92 12s. 6d_. A communication was received from the Education Department, stating that the matter of the withdrawal of tho concession of free school books, against which the committee had protesed, would receive consideration. The visiting, committee reported that tho library at the school was ready for open> ing, and the books would bo issued at once. , . A sitting of the Ikaroa Native Land Board was held here • yesterday, when a rtuinber of leases were dealt with. Mr. L. B. Bradstock, teacher at tho Rongokokako School, who has been appointed master of tho Stoke Orphanage, was last night entertained by the settlers of the district, and presented with a.purso of sovereigns. Miss B. Speddinfe, of Auckland, who is on a tour of the North Island on behalf of the Remuera Children's Home, which it is proposed to remove to the Manurewn district, gave an address here last evening.' The local branch of the W.C.T.U. held an "At home" yesterday, when an address on the aims and objects of the union was given by Mrs. Houlder, of Wellington. The Masterton Homing Club flew a bracelet race from Carterton yesterday. Tho first bird to reach home was from the loft of Mr. J. Milne. Tho winning ticket was No. 8. ' ' Mr. D. Hamlyn, of Napier, has been appointed acting-chief clerk at tho Masterton Post Office, pending the appointment of a postmaster to succeed Mr. S. Ipder, recently transferred to Christchurch. Tho Masterton School Committee is dissatisfied with the arrangements made by tho Railway Department for the conveyance of children to Wellington on tho occasion of the Dreadnought visit. The committee has declined to accept the responsibility of issuing a limited number of tickets to parents to accompany the children, and has decided to nsk for a special excursion train for Masterton, children and their parents.
