SHANNON. Tho following liavo been declared elected to the newly-constituted Buckley Drainage Board:—Messrs. E. Bryant, H. C. Easton, ,T. C. Peers, C. B. Robinson, Mid 11. W. Taylor. The annual meeting of tho Mechanics' Institute was held on Monday night. Mr. T. Lind presided. Tho secretary, Mr. C. H. Gardiner, presented his report and balance-sheet which wero approved and adopted. The following committee for the ensuing year was elected Messrs, I'. Lind (chairman), C. H. Gardiner (lion, secretary and treasurer), J. W. Murphy. ,T. R. Fargher, Hincliciifle, W. Voysey, G. a N. Stspncnson, F. W. Venn, and the Rev. j M. Mackenzie (councillors for the riding), i- It was decided to reduce tho subscription. * Tho Library Committee intend purchasj ing .jfilo worth of new books. 5 The Rev. J. A. Mackcnzio presided at s tho annual meeting of tho Literary and 8 Debating Society, held in tho Druids' Hall $ on Tuesday evening. Mr. W. Bd. During the past year there were 70 financial members on tho books. Tho ©lection of office-bearers re- \ suited as follows President, Mr. Maci kenzie; vice-president, Mr. T. Hensnan; S hon. secretary, Mr.. W. Clayton; hon. ! treasurer, Mr. Silby j committee (ladies), ? Mcsdames Laurvig, Gibson, and Miss Wickcliffe, Messrs. J. J. Trainer, C. H. Gardiner, and N. Hyde. The principal office-bearers were elected unopposed, but for the committee a ballot had to bo taken. The opening night will take the form of a "social" and will be held on May 8. The first debate will bo held on May .15, when tho subject will be "Freetrade (Mr. Barclay) versus Protection (Mi:. Sinclair)." CARTERTON. Tho funeral of the late Mrs. John Fen- , Bilaw took place at tho Clarovillo ceme- ' tery on Friday, the cortege'being a;largo one. Members of tlie loonl Lodge of Oddfellows headed the procession, and also acted as pall-bearers. The service at the graveside was conducted by tho Rev. Mr. Standage. A ball is to be held in Carterton in June, under the auspices of the local Lodge of Oddfellows. The points prize at the Caledonian sports, held here on Thursday, was won by Mr. R. M'Kenzie, of Masterton, who takes 'the gold medal presented'by Mr. H. Dooly, of Carterton.. The takings at the gate and grandstand at the Caledonian Pipe Band sports at Carterton jn Thursday amounted to £55 12s. Gd. OTAKI. At tho Magistrate's Court on Thursday, Dr. Steele, of Palmcrston, was charged with driving his car at an excessive speed along the Manakau Road. Ho was fined •E3, witnesses' expenses ,£1 is, gd,, and court cost 3 il' Os. Gd. Charles George, for driving a vehicle at night without lights, was fined 10s., costs 7s. Several civil cases went by default. At a meeting of tho Licensing Bench on Friday, a transfer wasi granted from W. Mlfegg (Central Hotel) to G. Noble, provided tnat the chairman, who is absent onj holiday, raised no objection. FEATHERSTON. ■At a meeting held on Thursday night a committee was set up to make the necessary arrangements for carrying out a sports. programmo on the occasion of the visit of'the officers and seamen of H.M.S. New Zealand, and a further mcetI ing was held last night to. consider tho details in connection with the isports. The visitors will arrive here at 11.30 a.m. on Thursday, and after lunch will adjourn to the recreation , ground for the sports. They will depart' at 8.17 p.m. on their.return to Wellington. Hxy.Wi.A. Finlayson, who was formerly on tho local. railway 6taff, and who has, for the past few years, been a member of tho Wellington clerical staff, has returned to the Featherston Railway Station. . ■ . ■ . Mr. H. Williams has , disposed of his ■; property at Kaiwaiwai to Mr. W. Dimock, of Wellington. , The Featherston Town Board is taking steps to 1-easo for building purposes several sections in the oentre of tns town. The leases will be for a term of 21 years, and the stipulation is to be mado that a building to the value of ,£3OO "shall be erected thereon.
