COOK MEMORIAL.
I " MORE. SUBSIDY WANTED, Application for an additional Governniont subsidy towards tho cost of meting a memorial to Captain Cook on Motuara Island. Queen Clinrloltc Sound, was made to tliel'rimc Minister yesterday by a deputation representing the Cook Memorial Committee and tho Wellington Yorkshire Society. It was stated that tho Ward Government had promised ,£370 as n J! for X' subsidy towards tho cost of tho memorial, which, however, would cost about jClfiOO, and the deputation asked that (ho Government would subsidise subscriptions over .ED7O by «£2 for XI, until the amount required had been raised. In reply, Mr. Massey expressed himself as in entire sympathy with tho proposal, but he added that if tho deputation canto, to him'asking for money, ho had none to five them. New Zealand, lie weed, should perpetiiafo the memory of Captain Cook, but tho difficulty of tho Govern.ncnt.vrns finance "every time." Tho dcuiuuh for money during ■ tho last fewlays had been simply enormous. They ivould hardly credit, it. The recent cold iimp and tho indications of winter had resulted in an enormous number of applilants for sohool buildings, roads, and so ' in, which amounted to far more than the government could supply.
