CITIZENS' BALL AND FETE. LORD LIVERPOOL UNABLE TO ATTEND, On Tuesday the following telegram was dispatched to the Governor by the Mayor (Jlr. 1). M'Laren):— "The citizens of Wellington extend a very hearty invitation to Their Excellencies to honour them by their presence at tho Citizens' Ball on Tuesday, the lath inst., and at tho Citi- ■ zens' I'eto in Newtown Park on tho 10th, both in honour of tho visit of H.M.S. New Zealand to Wellington.— D. M'Laren, Mayor." His Excellency replied as follows;— "I much apprccinto your kindness in wishing that tho Countess of Liverpool and myself should bo present at tho Citizens' Ball, but wo much regret that owing to previous engagements we shall be prevented from being present on tho 15th and lGlh inst." . A spccial meeting of tho City Council is to bo held at 4.110 p.m. to-day in connection with tho reception of tho officers and crew of 11.M.5. New Zealand. THE YACH'I'SMEN. In connection with. tho. visit ~of the. H.M.S. New Zealand, a meeting of yachtsmen and motor boat owners of Wellington was held on Tuesday night when the following arrangements were niadu:--The rendezvous has been fixed for Kau Bay in d southerly wind, and Shelly Bay (in Evans Boy) m. a northerly wind.' Time, not later than 2 p.m. Yachts and motor lauuclics will assemble at tho rendezvous, and, when tho battleship appears, will form into line in tho following position: Yachts oil the port side, launches on the starbcWd side. Yacht and launch owners aro asked to communicate at once with their, club, officials, in order to obtain their number position. The proceedings have been mado as simple as possible, in order that'they may be curried out without any difficulty by the different vessels participating. It only remains-now for each.launch and yacht owner to do his part in co-operat-, ing with the rest, so that the best pospossible display may be given. . After accompanying tho battleship to the anchorage, yachts and launches, ill passing under her stprn, w'ill dip ensigns in salute, as they do so. All boats taking part aro requested to do their utmost to keep their correct position and in proceeding up the harIwiir those vessels passing; the battleship's stern should dip their ensigns as they pass. The/Commodore of the P.N/Y.C. is acting as marshall and will bo ' oil; board Sir. Palmer's fast, launch Waione. If the day is favourable for a display by rowing enthusiasts it is understood that they will form up'.on the starboard side of the warship. The Amokura, Duchess, and other steam vessels will bo in line astern. THE CHILDREN;' ;. As o?ily tho chorus of school children who aro to sing a number of patriotic songs the harbour as the cruiser steams to her anchorage can be accoriimodated on the Duchess, Mr. ralmer (of tho Navy League; states that' tho Union Steam Ship Company has very kindly placed tho tug Terawhiti at his disposal for the conveyance of a proportion of the juvenile members of the league. It will bo understood that all the children who havo joined tho leaguo during recent months cannot be accommodated on this special occasion. Only those who are supplied with tickets will bo able to secure a, trip on tho 'Terawhiti. Mr. Palmer also points out that it will bo necessary to give the Duchess a prominent- place in tile harbour procession, otherwise .the vocal efforts of the choir will bo wasted. This | should bo attended to. The final rehearsal held yesterday afternoon was very successful. THE PROGRAMME. New Zealand diiring the vessel's stay in Wellington-.— Saturday, April 12—Arrival. , Official visit to his Excellency tho Governor and return by his Excellency the' Governor. 1 Official visit by members of tho Government, City Council, and Harbour Board. Wellington Club dinner (officers). Monday, April 14.—First visit of.Wairarapa school children. Harbour Ferries Company's picnic at Day's Bay. Garrison Officers' social in evening." Tuesday, April 15.—Second visit of Wai•rarapa school children. Citizens' ball at Town Hall. Visit to'Wercroa State Farm by special train (seamen). Wednesday, April IG.—First visit of Manawatu school children. - Picnic and sports gathering at Newtown Park, arranged by Citizens' Reception Committee. Thursday, . April 17. Second . visit of Manawatu school children. Visit to Wairarapa by special train (seamen). Ball at Wellington Club. Friday, April IS.—Luncheon at Town Hall to Captain Halsey and to officers of ship by the Government. Saturday, April 19.—Cricket match with Wellesley Club. Orphans' Club reception officers. Motor-cycles , races, Trcnthrnn (seamen). Sunday, April 20.—Nothing arranged at present. ) Monday, April 21.—Nothing arranged. Tuesday. April 22.—Nothing arranged. Wednesday, April 23.—Nothing arranged. Thursday, April 21.—Departure. After the vessel's arrival the Citizens' Committee will endeavour to arrange entertainments for tho days, not yet provided for. The Citizens' Naval Ball, which is to be held in the Town nail on the evening of Tuesday. April 15. to commemorate ths arrival of H.M.S. Mansun, tho Dominion representative in Melbourne, to visit the New Zealand gift battle-cruiser on. April 3. The visitors were cenveved, to the warship, which is anchored off Cel-' librand, in tho ferry steamer Williamstown. Among those present were:' Messrs. F. 31. B. Fisher. New Zealand Minister' for Customs; W./R Montgomery, secretary to tho Nej/ Zealand Customs; H. J. Maik-on. G. 11. Broome, general manager of the State Coal Miiie; W. Gray, .T. Bee, .T. M'lvonzie-Heiiry, T. W. Beer, R. li. Wood. .1. Cunningham, W. H. Quick, A. Campbell, E. T. Gould, and 11. Linton, Dr. Smyth, and the Rev. F. G. Masters. As tho Willianistown approached the war vessel, the ship's band played' an inspiriting; air. The visitors wore welcomed by Captain Tlalsey. and after partaking ot aflcrnoon tea -split up : into small partios and inspected the ship. No part of the vessel, however remote, was free from the presence of curious sightseers, who wore eager to acquiro information regarding their splendid gift to the defence of the Empire. ; Every officer and mall off duty was- surrounded by ail interested crowd, as he explained 'the working of the semaphore, ,12in. gun®, searchlights, and other part's of tho battleship's equipment. Moving about among Iho crowd, and genially answering the hundreds of questions which poured in. torrents from dozens of lips, was H.S.H. Princo George of llatlenberg. Probably not one-half of those who fired questions at tlis princo were aware of his identity. He was introduced to a number of leading New Zealanders. and chnlted with thorn for a considerable time. Princo Geoyge, who is a sub-lieutenant, is a well-built young man of middle height, with fair hair and blue eyes.
