aud a similar remark applies to the racing. '.L'lio tulalisatui- snowed a big increase oil last year's figures, and everything went oil' smoothly. Autumnus put up a great pci-torniaueo in J the Manawatti Stakes, ami, barring pcriiti[>s the North Island Challenge Stakes, bir Cico. Clifford's eolt luis never done better, lie is certainly entitled to rank as one of the best three-year-olds whjeli the Dominion has produced. Multiply also covered himself with glory by the way ill which he won the Longbnrn Handicap, and it is plain that his Napier and Trenthnm form was all wrong, ileeley handled him well, and, after appearing to be hopelessly beaten at the half-mile, , the Gisborne horse had the race won a furlong from •home, and arrived easily. • I.eolanter and Kau'voa were evenly backed in the Kurero Hurdles, and, in a lesser- degree, were Flingot and Ngutiliumi. Eiya anil Flingot lost their riders at the first fence, and Cornelian led the way ildwu the back from Sam Pail, with Ivanroa whipping the field. The leader was done with six furlongs from home, -when Sam Pan rushed to the front; and, holding the others at bay, ho ran in a comfortable winner. Leolanter, Kauroa, and Aema jumped tho last fence, together, and Aema gained second place. Leolanter was' fourth, and Ngatimaru, who inado a good showing for a beginner, close up fifth.. Tyrannic and Cornelian were a long way back. Rendrock was the only scratching. Neither J, Deerey nor J. O'C'onnell received other than a harmless shaking. There were only six runners in the Maiden Plate, and the public fastened on the two-year-old Gerberga as tho best of good things, and so it certainly looked, but Sweet Zinnia, from Rayner's Wangau'ui stables, easily upset tho Highden two-year-old, and supporters of tho favourite got very little of their money back. Gcrberga hung out a good deal round tho bend, but it made no, difference to the result of the race. . ' , • • i After her good showing behind Patron-, ale at Eeilding, Passadena should .have been well supported in tho Taikorea Welter Handicap, but Rill and tho bracketed pair, Lockwood and Kilosteii, wero better supported. There was a mix up, after the start, from which Kill and Ceylon seemed to emerge badly. Royal Simon soon took charge, but Passadena was in a good position behind, and, at the bottom of tho straight, she camo on, and won easily. Waitoto, the third horse, got a, very Ijad passage. Montreal, Lockwood, and Rill were the next to finish. The Judicial Committee held a long inquiry into tlio bumping, and decided to severely- admonish the rider of Passadeiia. ' . Autumnus put up one of the best gallops of his life in tho Manawatu Stakes, which lie. won by a good head from Bou Reve, after a great struggle. Tho winner was a good favourite, and, ou' all sides, it was admitted that lie stripped-as well as could be desired. In addition ho did a better preliminary than usual. Bon Revo appeared to got tho best of the start, and led the field a merry danco down tho back. With a furlong gone, Autumnus was last, but he then moved up, and, .though he stopped onco on' the bend, ho then camo round the field, and was a sure second place'gettcr as tlioy passed tho stewards' stand. At .this juncture, .'however, Oliver, on Bon Reve, was sitting still and not a furlong to go. Would the .favourite get up? Those who remembered his groat finishing powers said "Yes," but several voices wont up offering to bet against him. Suddenly, out came, Oliver's stick, indicating that liis mount was faltering, but, game horse that ho was, Hon Reve responded, and the pair left the others as if they were standing still. Autumnus, on tho outside, put out ..his lioad again- and again, but Bon peve was not to be shaken off. A desperate struggle-.-then took place, and the brilliant bay colt got tho verdict in the'last stride. It was a royal strugglo between two good horses,: and both put up foriuanccs good, enough , to ; win nine or' ten such races. Jason,, who was:-pro-minent throughout, ran. a fair third, and then camo-Gladiole, who did not gat to the front, and the" bracketed pair—Salzburg and Ogier. . : ' The ;600-guineas "boom"—Chaminade— burst badly in the. Hack Welter Handicap, when Leonta presented him with 151b. and badly beat him. Tho ' two favourites began well, and the race was not marred by Anything in tho way of a cross or jostle'.,, fePnpamaraina ;and Charge led from Rangikapua and Mediterranean till tlie straight was entered, wlien' Leonta came .fast-on the outside, and, from this, ho had to be ridden to get to Papamarama. •' He beat him easily at the finish. Cliargo and Chamiha.de were just outside-tho placed horses.' Obligant was a better favourite than Corondform in tho Longburu Handicap, with Multiply and Merrivonia well backed.. At tho end of the first_ furlong Kina was leading from Lady Nolan and Multiply, but. the last-named last' his position going round tho top bend, and fell back last. Half a mile from home, Coroniform had Kina, and led into the straight, but. Multiply .then camo through and soon settled. Coroniform. ' Going on ho won comfortably by.threo lengths with Merrivonia (who came from a long way back) in third place. Zetes was a good favourite in tho Woodliey Hack Handicap, with the bracketed pair (Monologuo and Rosalys) next ill demand. Zetes and-Powder Fox soon established a two lengths' lead oil • tho field, but as usual, tho latter ran course, on tho bond, and Zetes led into the straight, followed by Lady Louisa and the remainder bunched.' Lady Louisa quickly put the issue beyond doubt, but Monologue only scraped liomo by half a head ; from Gazette with The Diver (who came from a long way back) fourth, and Sepoy and Zetes next. Innoladdo-"dwelt" when the barrier rose, and was tailed off the. wholo way.: j Tho last race was a good betting one, and several of the runners camo in for solid support. Makara was withdrawn at the eleventh hour, and after a lot of uncertainty, Bluo Lako finished up favourite. Hermia played up at tho barrier, aud after, a couple of breaks, tho field went off with her at the tail. Down the back Caller Davon led from Sanguinary and Peroneal, but onco in the straight Glenfi'nnan camo through, and quickly placed tho issue in safo keeping. Peroneal just headed" Sanguinary in tho last stride. Blue Lake tired badly over tho last furlong aud Hernia was never dangerous. Tho winner won liko a good horse, and showed that his Trentliam form must liavo been all wrong. SECOND DAY'S ACCEPTANCES. (By Telegrapt.—Presa Association.) Palmerston, April 9.
