Constablo Wade, who was shot and dangerously wounded during tho Waihi trouble, has returned' to Wellington, and was able to resume duty at Mount Cook Xolice _ Station yesterday. Constable Undo is well on the way to recovery, although all efforts to extract tho bullet navo failed. Ho has been assigned to general inquiry work in connection with the Jlount Cook district. Mr. Arthur Marryat, wlio is standing for election to tho Public Service Appeal Board, is a Civil Servant of 22 years' standing. His nominators in the present election arc Messrs. Geo. Mr. Marryat lias filled various offices in the association, including those of treasurer of the Dunediiv branch and delegate representing that branch on the Council of tlio Association. m*- I'*1'* ?• ,o'Callaghan retired from tho office of Victorian Commissioner of Polico oil March 31. He has.been succeeded by Mr. A. G. Sainsbury. Mr. Cyrus Herbert Head, a prominent musician, died in Brisbane on March 31 from appendicitis. Deceased, who was a recent arrival from England, was taking a prominent part iu tho recent Eisteddfod competition, as tho conductor of several choirs, but during the first day of tho festival became seriously ill. An operation proved of no avail. Mr. Neil 1 Stewart, who died at his residence, North Pammatta,'a few days ago, was in his !)7th year. In 1852 -ho was ' made one of tho Gold Ccinmissioncrs for the Bathurst district, but removed to Paramatta in 1850. lie was a lieutenant m the first -volunteer Company-formed in Pariamatta, and Was up 'to tho time of his death an elder and sessions'- clerk at St. Andrew's Church. He loft severaldaughters. Tho cause of death was heart failure. ■ Mr. H. Power, the Australian artist, -who_ has been for the past seven, years in Paris and London studying and executing commissions, has returned to Australia. Mr. Power did a great deal of colour work for the "Sphere," and various hunt clubs and sporting bodies in England. By command of his Majesty, Mr. Power did a picture-of an Australian bullock team m water-colours. Professor Dickie aAd Mrs. Dickie,. of Knox College, Dunedin, arrived at tho Bluff by tho Maunganui from Melbourne yesterday.' - | A number of members of Wesley Church, Island Bay, met on Saturday to say good-bye to the Rev. Constable Lloyd, of the Auckland polico district office, left Auckland for Ciiristchurch on Friday, to take up clerical duties in tho police district office there. Prior to his departure he was presented by his clerical confreres with a goldmounted cigarette holder, and by tho detective staff witlr an umbrella, inscribed to mark tho occasion of its giving. Messrs. J. B. Kirk and John Sheridan aro announced as candidates for tho Mayoralty of Gisborno. Mr. Scott Colvillo having resigned his position as secretary for tho Auckland Choral Society, Mr. John G. Eesteil has been appointed in his place. Mr. T. L, Churchward, who recently severed his connection with the firm o't Abbott, Oram, and Company to enter upon business on his own account, was last evening presented with a rolle,r-top desk by his old associates on tho firm's staff. The presentation was made by Mr. P.- Castle, who wished Mr. Churchward success in his no\v ( ! venture. In replyi Mr. Churchward thanked tho members of tho staff for tlieir handsome gift, and for their kindly good wishes, which' ho hoped always to retain. . Mr. John Farrcll, representative of J. C. Williamson, Ltd., arrived in Wellington yesterday to mako arrangements for tho production of tho "Blue Bird." At St. Hilda's Sunday School .recently tho superintendent (Rev. C. W. J. Mac'laverty) was presented by the secretary (Mr. Beckway), on behalf of the teachers and scholars, with an inkstand suitably engraved, on tho occasion of his approaching marriage. Tho Ror; J. Harris, who lias been transferred from Temuka to tho chargo of tho Greendalo (Canterbury) Methodist Churcli, ivas, with Mrs. Harris, entertained at a social gathering, by his parishioners o.nd presented with a silver after"noon tea service and silver-mounted • oak tray as a token of esteem.
