STRUCK BY LIGHTNING.
■ — $ — ' TELEGRAPH WIRES FUSED. There wero many in Wellington whft witnessed the -brilliant display of lightning on Saturday evening. Fortunately no damage was done in Wellington. At least ono other placo did not faro so well, tho te'egraphic equipment : of the Shannon telegraph office, tlirough which the . trunk wire passes to the west coast (North Island) towns, being badly damaged by lightning, tho result being that ' every wire was burnt out; •' Tlio Secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department (Mr. W. R. Morris) received tho following message from the postmaster at Shannon yesterday morning:- . "About 9.20 on Saturday night, heavy lightning fused the wires connected to tho test cabinet in tho Shannon' instru« nient room, all wires being burnt out, resulting in telegraphic communication, over this route being completely cut off.' Direct telegraphic communication with Palmerston North and Wanganui districts was arranged via tho east coast and Manawatu Gorge." The postmaster adds that tho damage caused by tho lire was confined to a few scorched boards in tho vicinity of tho' test cabinet. > ■ ■ i
