' The Executive Committee is to meet, in tlio Mayor's room on Monday evening, and the sub-committees in the Town Hall on Tuesday evening of next week." . A "LIVING BATTLESHIP." ' SCHOOLMASTERS AGAINST PROPOSAL. At tlio invitation bf the Mayor (Mr. D. M'Luren) eleven solioolmasters met in the Mayor's room yesterday afternoon to' con- . sider a proposal for a school-child/en's display at_ Newtown Park in connection Mvith the icte to be given'in honour of tho crow of 11.M.5. New Zealand on Wednesday week next .(April-lli).. The proposal was one made by Mrs. Grant, lato of Palmerston North, who outlined an interesting idea. She proposed to outline 011 tlie main ground at tho park a "living battleship," with the nid of school boys and; girls, and.gave certain'details as to how it could be done. At the same-time Mrs. Grant volunteered to 1 personally direct the display. v Mr. Watson (Te Aro School), 'who appreciated the enthusiasm which dictated tlie proposal, said he was strongly opposed to the school children being given anything further to do at present which was likely to.interfere with their-school work. Ho stated that . such was the exciteincnt caused by their participation 111 tlie recent Citizens' Carnival that they had barely settled down to their real work again, and further mentioned that a number of the children were participating'in the choral welcome to bo given to the warship's crew on her arrival.in the harbour on • Saturday next. 'Mr..Grundy -'(Clyde Quay) supported Mr, Watson's argument, and, in addition, pointed out the shortness of time atj their disposal, -and the difficulties of drilling an army, of children. The- other schoolmasters present were also of opinion that it was inadvisable to proceed, with the scheme as outlined. In reporting to the meeting of the Fete Committee - last evening, tlio Mayor explained Mrs. Grant's idea, and stated that tho 1 schoolmasters were opposed to anything which would interfere at all with school hours, in which circumstances lie could-not see his way clear to rccommencl tho adoption of tlio proposal unless 'Mrs. Grant was able'to get the children outside school hours. The schoolmasters seemed to be of opinion that such displays -tended to break down tho discipline of a school. Mrs. Grant wanted'the children of -the fourth, fifth, .and sixth standards. Ho would recommend tlio matter -to the Entertainment. Committee, who may find ways and means of taking it up. Mr. R. Fletcher seconded the motion, and thought that another effort might bo made. 'He did not know how "many 'rehearsals would bo required. (Mrs. Grant: "One.") Only one rehearsal, ami 110 did not think it would do the children any harm. ' On the. motion being put to the meeting, it was dccided to refer tho matter In (lie consideration'of tho Entertainment Committee. '.> Lieutenant Herd has written to Mr. C. W. Palmer, of the Navy League, offering the sen-ices of tho City Band to tlio Government and the Navy Leaguo for . Saturday, April 12, and also, if required, for a church parade the following day.
