THAT KELBURNE ACRE.

, A REPLY TO THE-MAYOR, In reference to the remarks made by tho Mayor (Mr. D. .M'Laren) at Thursday night's meeting of the City Council, on the proposal_to lease an acre of the I Town--Belt at Kelburne. to the Kelburno Bowling Club, for use as 1 a bowling green and croquet ground,' the secretary of the . Kelburno 'Bowling Club (Mr. Marquis) ■, states that the Mayor, made a statement that, tho' Kelburne Bowling Club in • applying for the lease of an acre of tho. . Town Belt, had misled tho council, and had made an attempt to shut out and hoodwink the ladies who had also applied for a certain area for the of forming a croquet club. "The position," Mr. Marquis says, "is this: In conversation with ' Mrs. M'Villey it was mutually agreed that a joint application be made, which meant that it would Teduce the cost of the formation, but unfortun- ' ately I misunderstood the area that would be required for the ladies, hence the reason for applying for' ono acre only. My directors arid myself conscientiously believed that an acre would be' quite sufficient to ' meet the requirements of the ' bowling and proposed croquet club. • It will cost the Bowling Club above .£IOOO to lay the green and the annual upkeep would run into something like .€2OO per year. It will be interesting to learn whether- the Mayor proposes that the council should find tho necessary money ' to lay tho green »and provide funds for its upkeep, or doe's he expect the Kel-j burne Bowling Club to expend their .£IOOO ' for the benefit of the Kelburne residents, of whom only .a very -small percentage would'probably become members of the club? Further, there is no idea of \gain or profit being made, the club being quito satisfied if they are able to meet their liabilities."
