BOXING.
"JACK" READ 1 OUTPOINTED. Though "Jack" Read made the pace almost from start to finish, and did much more work than Morey, his opponent, at the Stadium on March 22, the ,latter proved too good a boxer for him, and at the end of 20 rounds the title of resident lightweight champion <if Australia had changed hands (says the "Sydney ; Morning Herald"). Morey. who weighed 9st. lOJlb. t.o Eead s 9st. 10.f1b., was in better condition than when he last appeared at the Stadium, but though he was good enough for Read he was still not. at his best. From the start he left as much of the work to Eead as ho safely could, and though quite as powerfully built as the Tasnianiau, Morey was considerably the more tired out at the finish. Under the circumstances., it was only his superb boxing that enabled him to win. ' E-sad, whoso splendid condition, enabled him to go at his top form gong to.) gong, tore- ill at the start with solid work to the body, but after the first round Morey scored .well with a well-timed left and a quick right, and when' pressed gave a wonderful exhibition of skilful ducking. Thanks to Read, the contest, was always fast, and from the eighth to tenth rounds the title-holder hustled .matters in a manner that made many think he would stop'his man before the finish. In the tenth round Morey provided a sensation by dropping his hands when, apparently hard pressed, and letting Eead have three or four , jolts at his unprotected jaw. He stood the ordeal unshaken, and though it was Read's round the latter looked very cheap. After this Storey, went ahead again, and it soon became obvious that if he could keep it up he must win. In the fourteenth round he carried the battle to. the enemy, and, boxing with a sparkle that had before been lacking, had the better of rattling exchanges. He continued to score the better of the two, and, although Bead pulled up a little in the last couple 'of rounds, the Western Australian had a comfortable margin at the finish. Referee Scott's decision in his favour was loudly cheered.
