IMMIGRATION.
STATEMENT BY THE HON. H. D. BELL., (By Ta'ssraph.—Press Association.) Auckland, April 1. In reply to a question relative to the cabled statement that tlio Hon. Thos. Mackenzie,' tho High Commissioner, had made .arrangements for shipping n thousand immigrants to New Zealand this year, tho Hon. H. D'. Bell ventured tlie opinion that what the gable man intended lo inter was that tho High Commissioner had made arrangements with the shipping companies for 1000 berths' in Ihoir vessels for immigrants to New Zealand in the immediate future. As a matter of fact, a good manv thousand immigrants laud iii New Zealand yearly both through tho Department and'otherwise, said Mr. Bell. In addition to arranging for an increased inflimof domestic servants every effort would bo made also to meet ns far as .possible, demands for farm labour by obtaining a suitable class of malo immigrant with agricultural training.
