HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of thoHutt Borough Council was held last night and was attended by the Mayor (Mr.'E. P.' Bunny) and Councillors Hobbs, Ball, Hodgius, Knight, Clendon, Dawson and Roots. Mr. Evans advised that the springboard had been ereoted at tho Hutt bathing -shed, and pointed out that a sum of i£s 10s. had been subscribed, and asked the council to grant the balance reriuired (-C2 10s.). On the motion of the Mayor, the request/'was granted. The Hospital and Charitable Aid Board reported one case of diphtheria, in Rata Street. Mrs. E, Ryne asked permission to lay a pipc und'er the footpath in Victoria Street. It was resolved that the engineer do the work and charge the cost to the applicant. The Woodville Council asked for support in. the following resolution-.—"That in the opinion of this ccuncil the Government should impose a moderate tax on molor-oars and motor cycles; that tho proceeds of such' tax be 'handed over to, and expended' bs', the local bodies in maintaining and improving the roads affected by motor traffic, a special board being set up to allocate the distribution of the proceeds of such tax, a higher tax being imposed on cars. plying for lure.'' It was agreed /to give support to tho resolution. ' Councillor Clendon reported- that arrangements 'had been made to form a wicket on the .Recreation Ground for tho school- boys' -cricket team, and Hl9 engineer was instructed to secure tho necessary top-dressing and proceed with tho work at once.'
The engineer reported that the work 011 Section 5 of the eastern drainage was all but complete. Twelve chains of kerbing and-- channelling 011 White's Line, east had been completed at a cost of .£45 Is. Rapid progress had teen made with the Alicetown drainage (northern section), and a start has been made with the southern section. The redecking of Melling Bridge was progressing satisfactorily, and the bridge would bo open for traffic at the end of the week. One connection had been mado with the gas service, and two with water mains, making llio total of water connections to date 080. Permits to the extent of 713 have been issued under the drainage ami sanitary by-laws to date. , Councillor Roots then moved: "That an individual return' of all moneys to lie paid away, including wages, ,bo laid on the council table, at each meeting." TII6 mover said that he was prompted lo move this motion because a ratepayer had reported to him that an employee of the council was in a'chronic state of drunkenness for some time. There wasi a .return generally, showing how the money was spent, but what was wanted was to know how tho money was disbursed individually. The Mayor suggested- that the Wages Book bo laid open for inspection. Councillor Roots said that a reprimand should be given this employee for going on Hie spree, lie agreed with the Mayor, ami iillei-ed his motion, accordingly, and thus amended it was carricd.
