THE HALF-HOLIDAY QUESTION.
A LEGAL OPINION. The attitude of a body of shopkeeper* in disputing tho legality of a largo number of tlio signatures attached to tho petition for n poll oil tho universal holt-holi-day question lias raised an interesting point. It is understood that Mr. T. 1, Martin (formerly City Solicitor) is of tlw opinion that tho petition can be proved to be illegal, and if in the fact of that opinion (which is to bo formally given to-day) tho Town Clerk accepts the petition as legal; and authorises tho poll, it is very probable that an application will 1)0 niftcto to tho Supreme Court, for an iuiunctlon to restrain that official from acting until tho Court gives n decision on tho point. The result of such, action will be eagerly awaited, not only' in Wellington, but through New Zealand.
