RANGITTk'.KI CONTRACT ABANDONED. Some months ago tho Government let a contract under which n now outlet was to be cut for the Raugitikei River, so as to provido for tho proper drainage of tho Raugitikei Stvnmp. The contractor gothis plant 011 to tho ground and made rt •start, but has now tlivown up his contract, The Hon. W. P. Masse,v lias arranged that tho work of cutting tho outlet shall bo done by the Lands Department, The work will l» superintended by Mr. Thompson, of tho Lands Department, who is already in chnrge'of th«j' Ilauraki Plains drainage.' lie will honcefortli l>o in charge of both undertakings, It is anticipated that the work at tho Ilauraki Plains will not be completed for five or six wars yot. Something like 30,000 acres nave Imn drained, and tho land made available for settlement, and between f>o,ooo and GO,OOO acres havo still lo bo drained. Much of Iho work already done, however, will have some effect in taking awav waiter from the land not yet tuuped by the drains.
