THE WORD "OBEY."
The flag of tho Women's. Social and Political Union floats over the, residence of the Rev. R. B. L. Ex ton. chaplain of I ho Strand Workhouse, Edmonton, who has announced his decision to omit "obey" from marriago eel-vices ho may conduct in future. ■ "Do you think it n mere matter of form for tho woman to say 'obey*?" asked a "Daily News and Leader" representative. "A matter of form?" was the reply. "It's humbug, and we want to clear the world of humbug. Some , girls that I marry don't say the word, and I don't take any notice. They don't say the word in the Roman Catholic,. Nonconformist, or Jewish services, and they laugh at our scrvico. Tho idea of subservience to man is Eastern, and I can't understand how tho Church of England could Imve invented such a service." Mr. Exton believes tho word "obey" will ultimately be deleted from tho marriage service, bccauso a majority of tho bishops and congregations are in favour of that course.
