MASTERTON NOTES.
(From Our Special Correspondent.) - Masterton, March 27. Tho annual meeting of the Excelsior Hockey Club was held last evening, about 25 members being present. Eight new members were elected. The following officers were elected: —President, Mr. E Hall; vice4>residents, Messrs. E. Richards, W. Gibson, A. W. Cave, D. Casselberg, and Saville-Smitli; secretary, Mr. C. La Roche; management committee, Messrs. Crystall, Williams, Gook, Scrimgeour, .and .Johnson; delegates to tho association, v Messrs. Crystall,. Dickson, and Scrimgeour; senior selection committee, Messrs. L. Nicol, G. Scrimgeour, and G. Earr; junior organising committee, Messrs. Lawrence, Ward, Weaver, and Morris. Mr. AY. H. Beetham has just received advico that a line of 1754 frozen lambs, shipped Home on owner's account about Christinas time, realised the splendid prico of 19s. sd. per liegd. A settler who has resided m the South Wairarapa for many years, and who is a noted deer-stalker, expresses tho opinion that good "heads" are likely to be very few this season. He'says that while red deer have considerably increased in numbers their quality lias degenerated. A special meeting of tho Wairarapa Hospital and Charitable Aid Board is lo be held on Wednesday morning next to receive n deputation from Eketahnna in reference to the provision of a cottage hospital in that township. A previous derm, tution from Eketahnna on the same subject was "turned down" by the board. A labourer named Cnrl Pedersen wns arrested at Alfredton oil Tuesday night 011 a charec of breaking and entering tho store of Mr. L. Mattson, Mauricevillo \Vest, and committing mischief in the store to'lhe extent,of ill. The accused was brought before tho Court to-day, and remanded. Lieutenant M'Crislel, who wns recently transferred from Carterton to Mastortttn, has been promoted to the rank of adjutant of the Second Battalion, Ninth Regiment.
The annual meeting of the Masterton Football Club was held last evening. The balance-shoot disclosed a credit of 51! Es. 2d. Four new members were elected. Officers were elected, and it was decided to open tho season, with a scratch match on Saturday next. Another batch of Masterton farmers will appear before the Magistrate at Masterton tn-niorrow to answer charpos of exposing for sale sheep infectod with parasites. The defendant' in the libel, action, W. TC. Jackson v. "Wairarnpa Daily Times," lias filed a motion ill the Supreme Court, asking that judgment be entered for tho defendant, or that a non-suit be granted, or, in the alternative, that an order be made for a new trial. The principal grounds of the motion/arc:—()) That the words complained of are incapable of a defamatory meaning; (2) that the verdict was against the weight of evidence; (I!) that rortain evidence was improperly admitted.
