JERSEY BREEDERS.
MEETING, OF THE COUNCIL. A meeting of the council of the New' Zealand Jersey Cattle Breeders' Association was helu at Palmerston North on March 20 and 21. , Tliere were present: Messrs. W. M. Tapp (chairman, Auckland), A. H. Haleombe (Ureuui), W. V'. Harkness (Stratford), It. J. Linn (Hawera), W. H. Booth (Cartel-ton), 11. E. Watson (Christchurch), J. A. M'Crea, F. li Watson (Palniorston), and J. C. Lane (secretary). It was resolved to compile a set of points lor judging Jerseys. Tho Minister lor Agriculture wrote, saying that the representations of the association, asking'the Government to keep at tho experiment station a proper record, on economic principles, of the cost of feeding, and the record of buttertat l'or pedigree dairy stock would receive consideration.- As tho. letter was written last December, it was decided to write tho Minister again, asking if a decision had been come to, and if not to emphasise tiic extreme importance of tho request. It was decided, on- the suggestion of Mr. I\ S. M'ltae, of Stony Cr&k, to award a gold medal to the cow and heifer scoring the highest butter-fat records each year for entry in tho register of merit of tho association.
It was arranged to hold tho annual meeting at Palmerston North during ta-w-inter show week. Further arrangements were left to the local branch committee and the secretary. Robinson (Ohura), W. liemp (Onehunga), J. Broady (Nortlicote), A. Kemp (Pollock), F. Lcthbridge (I'eilding), A. H. Curtis (Maungataroto). Prefixes lor use in naming animals were approved as follows:—Workso (T. Dixon), lleid Park (T. D. Reid), Jersey da lo (J. Pettigrew), Lavington (E. S. Peryinaii), Waipiko (C. G. C. Dormer), Laurels (F. Cre-sswell), Rich wood (H. 'I. Smith), Irondale (I'. J. Petersen), Coniston (VV. A. Morgan), Hillsbourne . (E. I. Wilson), Grafton (A. A. White), Silverlocks (R. D. Harkness). Tho following cattle ivere reported as having been officially tested for seven days on behalf of tlife-owners:—W. Saywoll: Lady May, 10.511b. butter-fat; J. D. Healy: Bouquet, 12.82; Grannie's Frolic, 1-1.01 ;'P. C. Anderson; Lady Raventhorpo, 16.016; Dr. Watson: Darkie Maid, 18.11;, Clem,. 12.775; J. A..- M'Crea: Flossy V, 10.81; F. S. M'Rae: Tiki, 15.33. Tho champion medals for male and female, under the rules of the association, were allotted to the Manawatu and West Coast Spring Show, Palme-rston. It was also decided to, allot, a number of fiveguinea' trophies, ai\d the.'following shows were selected: North Wairoa, Whangarei, Pulcekohe, Danncvirlce, Wanganui, Hawera. The conditions attached to ' the trophies'are: For tho best two females in milk entered ill the Herd Book, to havo calved within previous 12 months of the show; to be won three times; not less than three entries to_compete,; the judge to be from the association list.
: A report was considered on the increasing size of the annual Herd Book, showing that since.the issue of Volume 5, with 257 entries, the book had increased tu 1040 for Volume 10, and from .135 paste to 331 pages. To meet the. increased cost ol printing, it was decided, to charge membets cost price, whicih means that Volume--10 will be fifteen Shillings. . Herd Book fees wore alio raised.to: }(ales, 6s. each; females, 4s. each; transfers, 2s. 6d.; and for non-members, double rates. The council prepared ■ a draft of the rules in a revised form for further approval at the annual meeting, of the association. > The new issue of the booklet, The Jersey for Profit," was reported ready for ' issue, and to be had on application to the secretary.
