PUBLIC SERVICE EXAMINATIONS.

» , STATEMENT BY MR. ROBERTSON. Some rather alarmist: statements liavt been published lately regarding exuminations in the Public Servico after the Commissioners assume control on April 1. Interviewed on the subject yesterday, , llr. IJ. Robertson (i'ublic Service Commissioner) said tluit the now regulations about to be issued would show the whole position. There never had been any liitentiou 11 on the part of the 'Commissioners, he continued, to examine everybody in the service. The I'ublic Service Act la<d down the conditions under which examinations were to be held. So far as the Commissioners were concerned there never had been any intention to frame regulations for examinations other than examinations in the daily work performed by an officer except as regarded juniors in the professional division who were learning, their professions. "There is no idea," said Mr. Robertson, "of putting qualified surveyors or engineers to examinations or any .other men who already have qualifications.' The intention of the examinations provided for the clerical division is that officers shall bo enabled to show that they are capable of performing the work of the .Department in which they are employed. As regards the limit of salary which an officer may reach under the present re. . filiations without passing the Civil Service senior examination, officers will learn the intention of the Commissioners when the now regulations are published. T'nm in hones that they will bo published Ixy tore 1 the end of this week.

"'l'hs Ccmmissioners," Mr. Hotoertson remarked in conclusion. "luivo not instructed ill any way thnt examination! shall lio held in any unclassified Depart" ■incut."
