Mr. William Halo 'White, late Assistant Director of Contracts at the Admiralty, and ivell known as an author tinder the pseudonym "Mark Rutherford," is dead. BISHOP OF LICHFIELD. London, March IG. The Bishop of Lichfield (Dr. Legge) died suddenly to-day. The .Right Rev. Augustus Legge, D.D., Bishop of Lichfield, was the son of tho fourth Earl of Dartmouth, by Frances, daughter of the fifth Viscount Harrington. ]Te .was born at Sandwell Ifall, Staffordshire, in 1639, and was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford, where he graduated IS.A., obtaining a second class in thp old school of law anil history in 18GI. no proceeded M.A. in 18G1, and D.D. in 1801. After studying for a timo at Lichfield theological college, he was ordained deacon in 18GJ, and priest in 18G5. Ho was curate of Handsworth, Staffordshire, from 18G1 to 18GG; curate of St. Matthew, Bryanston Square, from 18GG to ISG7; vicar of St. Bartholomew, Sydenham, from 1807 to 1879; chaplain to the Bishop of Rochester ami honorary canon of Rochester from 1877 to 1891; vicar of Lcwishani from 1879 lo 1891; proctor in Convocation for the diocese of Rochester from 1885 to 1891; rural dean of Greenwicli from 1880 to 188G; and rural dean of Lewisham from 1880 to 1801. He was consecrated Bishop of Lichfield in St. Paul's Cathedral on September 29, 1801. His jurisdiction extended over tho county o* Stafford and a portion of tho county of Salop. Ho is author of "In Covenant: with God," a book of instructions on confirmation, 1801.
