' PORTABLE INSTRUMENTS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.! Auckland, March 17., Sinoo tho introduction' of the New Zealand defenco scheme the authorities have introduoed many improvbmerts ill defenco metho'ds. The latest innovation, it is understood, will probably lake the form of portable wireless sets lor infantry brigades, and this week the Defenco Department wijt conduct trials of such sets, which are made oil the Telpfunken principle by the Australasian. Wireless Company. Mr, Eugene Roinhard, cliiof engineer of Telelunken Company at -Berlin, is to give demonstrations of the capabilities of these sets of instruments in Wellington, and for this purpose lie leaves for tlw south to-inonw. Portable instruments are as novel as they are useful. They are able to send messages over 60 or GO miles in daylight and will form a valuable asset to the equip: nent of tho defence forces. The necessary power is obtained from a small dynamo which is driven,-,by a bicycle arrangement fitted with pedals. Olio man working thesa creates sufficient force to ruu the dynamo at tile required number of refolutions to ganerato <:ho power; which in turn works the sending instruments. The whole outfit can,bo comfortably placed on one liorso and is very quickly dismantled ready for action. Sets are . now in wide use for military purposes at Home and on tho Continent.
