WAIKATO SHOW LAMBS.
THE LONDON AWARDS. Tho lambs which were shown at tho Waikato A. and P. Association's show in November last and then frozen and shipped to London to be judged there as to their suitability for English trade, arrived Home on January 31. Messrs. Weddell and Co., reporting on tho shipment, which comprised 30 lambs, state that speaking generally of the parcel the lambs are an exceptionally fine lot, being v;ry much more even •in quality than the similar shipment made last year, and a sample the Waikato district is to be congratulated on producing. Continuing, the report says: —The result certainly shows that some improvement has been made in tho breeding during the past year, and we certainly hope this will so continue that very shortly .vou will be exporting large parcels of similar quality lambs, in which case we can easily guarantee a price equal to the price realised for prime Canterbury lambs. With regard to this parcel of 30, we might mention that it .would be very difficult indeed to eclipse them out of tho best Canterbifry flocks as far as quality is concerned. It "was rather a difficult matter to place the parcels in order of merit, but after a very careful examination we have decided as fgbllows:— First prize—Pen No. 1308—Lichtenstein, Arnoldson and Co., second at show: These live lambs were exceptionally choice, being just tho article that is required' for the trade here and gained first place mainly on account of the fact that they were-the most even parcel of the shipment. • Second 1 prize—Pen No. 130D—Ruakura Farm, h.c. at show: Although this pen cannot be classed as being inferior to pen No. 1303, they were not such an even lot of lambs. ■ The quality, however, was very. prime indeed. Third prize—Pen. No. 1307— W. Chitty, not placed at show: This pen consisted of very gpod lambs, one . carcass in particular being exceptionally 'prime, and considering the fact that they are lighter lambs it was very difficult for .us to choose between this pen and pen No. 1309 for second place. Fourth prize—Pen. No. 1311—Lichtenstein, Arnoldson and Co., first at show: Theso were also very choice lambs, but were not up to the standard of the other pens, one lamb being'slightly more leirgy than the others. Fifth prize-Pen No. 1313-W. Chitty. • not placed at show: This pen ran No. 1311 very close. , Four lambs were particularly good, but one plain lamb throw this narcel into fifth place. Sixth prize—Pen ' No. 1310—Alex. Orr, not placed at show: These lambs were certainly .the worst if one might use this term in speaking of such choice lambs," of the shipment. In conclusion tho report says:—"Tho dressing and general appearance of these lambs were all that could be desired, only one lamb out of the whole being faulty, same having one leg badly bruised. We are realising these lambs on the Smithfield market next-week, and hope t<J seifd you particulars of prices realised by next mail. . '
