LIVINGSTONE CENTENARY.
: —fr—— ; — Next Wednesday evening, at the Town Hall, the Centenary of David Livingstone will be celebrated, when addresses will be delivered on the various aspects of his life and character. It is fitting that tho name of Livingstone should thus bo honoured. His personality is many-sided, and every side has in it a touch of greatness. To have opened up Africa for the world's commerce is a great thing. But ho is known beat not as on explorer, who has enriched the world by his discoveries, but as the discoverer of tho heart and will of the African. Throughout tho many years ho laboured for Africa; ho never had resort to force as <a means of subduing the natives to his purpose. Yet never had a man more loyal and devoted servants ■ than Livingstone had, and tho secret of his power may best bo told in his own words: "No one ever gains much influence .in this country without purity and uprightness. Tho acts of a stranger are keenly scrutinised by both old nnd young, and seldom is tho judgment pronounced even by a heathen unfair or nil; charitable." Tho Livingstone Centenary will bo cele-> brated at tho Terraco Congregational Church to-morrow.
