UNIVERSITY BOAT RACE. A MEMORABLE FINISH. i By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright London, March 13. Oxford University beat Cambridge University in the annual boat race by threequarters of a length. Cambridge won the toss, and chose the Surrey side. The weather was fine, and there was a light following wind. Tho smooth water favoured Cambridge, who were quickest away. At the milo they were a length ahead, and at Hammersmith a length and a half.

At Chiswick Oxford spurted, and rcduc-, ed the lead to half a length at Barnes Bridge. Cambridge maintained tho lead till a quarter of a mile from the finish, when Oxford made an effort which will be iiVemorablo in boat racing annals.

, The crew, putting an immense amount of power into their work, crept up inch by inch. Cambridge' could not respond to the calls, for a spurt, but led to within 150 yards of tho finish, when Oxford cune hand-over-hand, and won a magnificentlyfought race by three-quarters of a length. Time, 20min. 53sec. The Prince of Wales followed the race in tho umpire's launch. Oxford have now won the University boat race, on 38 occasions and Cambridge on 30—the 1877 contest being a dead heat.
