DEPARTMENT PICNIC.

4 : .- The'third- annual jilting of the Marine and Inspection of Machinery Departments was held at Day's Bay yesterday, a largo number of guests attending-, and thoroughly enjoying tho outing. They were conveyed to and from the bay in, the s.s. Terawhiti, kindly lent for the occasion b.V the Union Steamship Company, to whom tho thanks of the committee are. due for the courtesy extended. Luncheon was provided for the guests in the pavilion. During the day a number of sports events were got oil', together with a cricket match, the result? being;— Tho cricket teams represented the combined Departments and the Government steamers, and resulted in a win for tho latter by four wickets. Por the winners Gilroy (51) and Waddell (49) showed splen-< did form, and Burke (15) batted well for tho losers.
