CANADIAN DAIRYING.
EXPORTS GROWING LESS. The season 1911-12 will, soys a Canadian writer, bo marked in the history of I lie dairying industry in Canada as bciiiE the first since Confederation in which practically 110 butter was. exported to Great Britain. The total exports of butter from all ports during the period from April ] to October 81 ainounted to 492,95511)?., consisting chiefly of tinned butter from the Maritime Provinces to the West Indies, and inferior dairy butter from the Prairie Provinces to the United States. Coupled with the small export of butter is (ho further fact, which at first elanco seems rather astonishing, that: Canada ■imported during the same period, lhat is to say, during the active season of manufacture in Canada, 110 fewer than 2,759,928 pounds of butter. On anaivsi?, however, it is found that these figures are largely made up of imports from NewZealand into. British Columbia, and also from iho United States into lhat I'ro- . vince. British Columbia requires every year several million -dollars' worth of butter ill excess of her own production. I lie freight charges are less from NewZealand to Vancouver than lliey are from Montreal to Vancouver, and (lie price of butler ruled higher in the Montreal market during the period mentioned than it did in New Zealand, thus offsetting the duty on til-" 1 butter imported. Tn iho following approximate table ,f heexports of Hie principal dairy products lor the period April 1 lo October 31. are compared with the same period of 1911;—
