CONSUL ATTACKED.
CHINESE OFFICIAL SHOT. AFFRAY IN MELBOURNE. Br Tclcjrrarh—Press Association—Oonyrlehh Melbourne, March 12. Thomas Jones Chia, an accomplished Chinese, aged thirty, has been arrested on a charge of unlawfully wounding with intent to murder. '■ The victim of the affray, Sir. Yung Liang Hwang, is ithe Chinese ConsulGeneral, who was at one time Chinese Consul' in Wellington. Chia. who lately was prominent through his marriage to a well-known Australian girl,, called on Sir. Ilwang, and is alleged, after a long argument regarding his private affairs, to have fired two revolver shots, but they were without result. He then fired a third as Hwang grappled with him, the bullet passing through Hwang's upper arm and shoulder. The wounded man's condition is not serious. The Chinese Government, in, September, on the recommendation of the Consul, terminated Chia's engagement as secretary to the Consulate. Chia lias since been acting as manager of the Eastern Trading Company. He has held a number of important positions, including the headmastership of the Prefectual Training College at Changchow, the Professorship of English at Peking University, and chief secretaryship to Tong, Chinese Consul-General in 1910-12.
