(From Our Special Correspondent.) » — A committee of Carterton ladies aro this, week making a house-to-house canvas for the, aid of Dr. Barnerdo's homes. Everyone knows the great work inaugurated and carried on. by this philan. thropist, and most will feel inclined to contribute something towards it. 'Tl;ehomes arc supported entirely by voluntary contributions, and tho smallest sum is gratefully received. On Saturday "last two men wore employed at Longbnsh blasting rock. They unearthed the skull and lower' jaw of a human being. I'roni appearance, it ds that of a Maori, and has been buried under the rock for a considerable number of years. The bone is in a good, state of preservation. The Belvedere School Committee is mo'v. ing in the matter of arranging an excursion of Carterton_ and district school children to the Dominion's warship New Zealand, shortly expected to arrive at Wellington. The idea is an excellent one, and will no doubt be warmly taken up.
