True Blue and Lugeou <tro among those that have accepted for the steeplechase on the firstday of the Southland meeting.
Nominations for the Wellington Racing Club's autumn meeting close on Friday next with tho club's secretary, Mr. A.*E. Whyte. Weights for the first day's events at tho Feilding Jockey Club's Easter meeting will be declared about Saturday next. ■ Mr. Lance Wood states definitely that Sartovna will not make the trip to Ellerslie. The Sarto filly may,' however, be given a rim at Tauherinikau at Easter. "Phaeton," of the "New Zealand Herald," has recently been told an interesting story of the early career of Anna Carloan's, tho Soult— Czarcrna filly recently sold in the South Island to a Victorian sportsman for 800 guineas. When a foal Anna Carlovna was running with .beldam on : Mr. Friedlander's estate at the Karaka. She had the ill-luck to get into a bad drain, and. was just about on. her last legs when one of the farm hands (Tom M'Coll) eaino across the mite, and just picked it up and carried it to the homestead, where she received every care. Anna Carlovna was very much on tho small side, and for a good while her resciier says she was not worth much on sight.
Acceptances for the first-day's events at the Wairarapa Racing Club's meeting close on Friday next "It is a well-known fact (says an Auckland writer) that certain portions of Musket's anatomy were well distributed when the famous son of 'l'oxopholite was numbered amongst the defunct ill ISBS. I had often wondered to what quarter the skull of the celebrated .''sire went. The other day I ascertained that the interesting relic is in the posscssioii of Mr. E. Cole, a resident of Papakura, who in tho nick of time some few years back rescued the head when it had a narrowescape of being sent to a bonemill. From what I can learn, the skin of the celebrated horse, when stored-in the city, was pretty well destroyed by the attacks of rodents, and it may have completely disappeared long since." Moorilla, who wo'i the Hoseliill Cup, is the full sister to Lady Medallist. Two years ago Moorilla won the Sydney Cup, and she has also other good performances to, her credit.
lii addition to the Nelson and Invcrcargill meetings in the South Island this, week, there will be u smaller fixture at Waimato on Thursday. North Island sportsmen will te more interested in the autumn meeting of the Napier Park Racing Club, which takes place at Greenmoadows on AVednesday and Thursday. In view of his engagements at Kiccarton at Easter, special interest will attach to the running of-Cheddar in the Napier Cup to-morrow. Mr. E, J. AVatt, in whose colours Cheddar runs, has not won the Cup since WOS, when Arcliglit carried his colours to victory. FIXTURES. March 12 and 13—Southland R.C. Autumn. March 12 and 13—Napier Park R.C.
