AN EXCITING EXPERIENCE.
FIiKKY-PUNT ADRIFT IN FLOODED RIVER. (By Toleera'ph.— Preeß Association.) Invercargill, March 10. Tho passengers, ten in number, who set off from tho west side of tho Waiau in the punt on Saturday, at 0.30 p.m., for iuataperc, had an unexpected and exciting experience.
\Vhen about halfway across tho river, which was running high and strong, tho hook on the wiro ropo broke oil md tho passengers wero carried down the river towards the mouth at u rapid rate. What tho consequences would bo wero not apparent at the outset, and serious results wero apprehended, until the punt was found to bo making for the I'upatotara side, where it went ashore about 11)0 yards from the placc at which it was released from tlio fastenings.
Tho Rev. Mr. M'Ewau, who was 011 bonrd, was struck on tho head by tho wire rope, receiving a nasty cut, which hud to bo stitched by Dr. Stuart, of Otahuhu. A small boat, only capable of conveying passengers across, has been established, and it is expected that it will be about a week before the.punt service can be restored.
