MASTERTON NOTES.
(From Our Special Correspondent.)Mas'erton, March G.' The'secretary of the Masterton Chamber of Commerce lias been advised by the Minister for Public Works (the Hoii. W. Fraser) that a date cannot yet b«> fixed for the Ministerial visit to the Wairarapa. Major-General' Godley, Commandant of the Forces, will visit the Wairarapa on Olarcli 19, and will inspect the "senior cadets in the various townships. Quite'a number of Masterton residents are about to visit the Old Country. The Misses M'Gregor left for Sydney, en route to England, to-day; Mr. and Mrs. John Hessey, the Very Hcv. J)ran M'Kemia, tha Misses Vera Edwards and Fthel Johnson leavo next month, and others are to follow. Owing to tl«£. slaughtermen's strike and the dry weather, a heavy fall in the price of sheep has taken place in this district. This fall has reflected itself on tho retail trade, and the price of mutton has coma down with a vim. Mr. li. W. Carpenter, editor of the "New Zealand Graphic," is at present on a visit to "his friends in Masterton.
At the inquest to-day on the body of liobert .T. Ewington, who was shot while p'g-hitnting in the Lower Valley,, a verdict of accidental death was returned. Masterton, Morch 7. Mr. George Falla, who. lias been railway stationmaster at Masterton fur' a minibsr of years, lias received notice of his transfer to hivc-rcaivnll, and xnll bo leaving shortly. At n meeting of managers of (he Masterton Technical School last evening, Mr. K. .1. Foss was appointed teacher of (lie book-keeping class, and Mr. W. Miller teacher of Knjlish and arithmetic. Hie teachers of last year were also re-ap-pointed. The managers of the school have devoted. considerable +11110 of late to the work of reorganising the classes. The Wairurapa Amateur Swimming Club got oil' a 75yds. handicap at tlio Parke Lake last evening. Klevcu swimmers competed. The race was ;ron by 11. Garrett, with a handicap if Usee. Two events were l-un bv the Masterton Cycle Club 011 the Park Oval last evening. A. half mile handicap was won by H. Crawley, and a one and a haifmilc handicap by A. C. Ferrick. A.young-bird pigeon race was ilown by {lie Mastefton Homing Club from Kailoke yesterday! Forty-two birds competed. Mr. A. Miller's Wireless was the li~st bird lo arrive home, ond did the d : stanco in the fast time of 1753 yards per •: , imite. This constitutes a record for the club. Two races in connection with the Wairarapa Amateur Athletic Club were run 011 the Park Oval last evening. A 2i'o.vds. handicap was won by lv. Messenger, <»u<i a mile handicap by L. Crass.
