MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. ' AC the fortnightly meeting of* the City Council, hold last night, tho Mayor (Mr.' D. M'Liireii) presided, and there were also present: Councillors lv. Fletcher, 0. .Shirtcltlie, J. 1). i-'itzgerald, A. li. .Hindmarsh, Jl Tregear, \Y. ;i\ Barber, L. M'Jvenzie, A. K. .T, GodlwiyG. •tfrost, F. Cohen, and John Smith. LuAvo of absence was granted to Councillors J. Trevor and Jno. Fuller, junior.
At the instance ol' tho Finance Committee, a further and final compassionate allowance of Ills. per week for tho term of six mouths 'was granted to tho widow of an old corporation employee. A sub-committee, consisting of the Mayor, Councillors Fletcher, Hindmarsh, and Atkinson, was set up to consider and report with respect to the communication received from the secretary of the Wellington Leaseholders' Association, regarding Wellington Corporation leaseholds'. It was decided that as recommended by tho Tramways Board of Management, a special -Id. return ticket be issued at the (Jourtcuay Place ollico between the hours of 7 p.m. and 8.15 p.m., available between Courtenay Place and tho Kilbirnio Skating liink, for a trial for a period of six months,, commencing from tho lOtli instant.—Councillors Barber, : Slurtclilfe, and Smith expressed their disapproval of tho proposal, and voted against its adoption. ...
011 the recommendation of the Reserves Committee it was decided that the Roseneat.li and Oriental Bay Municipal Electors' Association bo informed, in reply to their application for the erection of bathing-sheds for . ladies and gentlemen at Ballcna Bay, that 'the question will bo considered in connection with tho framing of next year's estimates. The Reserves Committee reported that they had visited the Botanical Gardens in connection with certain recommendations mado by tho superintendent of reserves for tho improvement of tho main entrance to the Gardens. The superintendent rccommendod that the pino trees 011 tho north-eastern side bo cut back- to a width of about one chain from the path, that tho path be widened and the ground trenched and sown with grass, and. planted with shrubs. The committee suggested 'tliat tho superintendent bo granted authority to carry out "the wort for a dislanco of about two chains, commencing from the. end. farthest from 1 the gate — The suggestion was adopted. 1 •
.The proposal of,the Technical Education Board to erect a temporary building on land in Mercer Street, consisting of workshop, fitting shop, open shelter shed for day students, and a room for.lockcrs, was agreed to. The Eire Brigade Committee reported as follows:—That they have received a report from the superintendent of the Firo Brigade with respect to the establishment of a Firo Brigado Station at tho top of Constable Street, for the purpose of serving Newtown. Kilbirnio, and Island Bay districts. The committee recommended that the policy bo adopted, and that tlyj incoming council bo aslted to provide 011 'the estimates for next '.year for the work. Tho estimate, according to the superintendent of the Fire Brigade, is: Building and excavation, .£2-100. The committee have also received a report from the superintendent; of the Firo Brigade recommending the erection of ! a small Fire Brigade station on a site at ftoad. The committed recommend that 'the work be carried out at an estimated cost of .£l5O, and that such amount be, provided in. tho next year's estimates. ' \
