PAHIATUA HORTICULTURAL SHOW.

: : A RECORD GATHERING.

Tlie Pahiatua A. and P.. Association's fourth' annual horticultural and industrial show, held on Tuesday, was generally proclaimed one of the best gatherings' of the kind ever held in' the district. Previously this show has been held simultaneously with the A. and P. show, but tho alteration of tho dates is said to have been a great improvement. ' Tho entries constituted a record, the total being 850, which represents an increase of over 2CO on last ..year's show, when the total was COO. The principal entries in the respective classes'.this year were as follow:— Vegetables, 178; children's exhibits, 132; cookery and preserves, ISO; cut flowers, 125'; farm • produce and fruit, 114; industries and fancy work, 81. 'Mr. A. Eddie, of Makomako, who judged the farm produco and vegetables, said the .competition, in the potato, French beans, and scarlet runner classes was very keen. Many.of tli-e potatoes were of a nice even size. A number of tho potato exhibits were, .however, of a larger and coarser class. He urged that above all. things exhibitors should grade the potatoes. The onions placed first were a very nice lot, and'of good keeping ■ quality. Mr. Eddie also spoko in high terms of praise of the I carrots, turnips, and mangolds exhibited. The size of tile mangolds for this time of the year was unusual. . The quality of tho dairy produco came in for special praise, though it was remarked that it was a pity that in a big dairying centre like Pahiatua more entries were not forthcoming. ' Mrs. M'Kennic, of Masterton, stated that tho exhibits in the cookery section were an advance on thoso at tho last Masterton. show. She expressed surprise at tho great number of entries. Tho cakes and scones were splendid, and' the children's exhibits were especially good. ' Mr. J. Nairn, Palmerston North, who judged the cut flowers and pot 'plants eaid the display of flowers far previous exhibitions ho had seen in, Pahiatua, and reflected credit upon tho district as a whole, corisideriug tho vagaries of the season.
