A GREAT HUI
OPENING CEREMONIES. - (By Telegraph.—Presß Aeeociation.) ' Gisborne, February 5. The great liui at Manutuke was opened to-day in the presence of hundreds of spectators and the Minister for Native Affairs, who was accompanied by Dr. Poinare. Sir .Tames Carroll, Mr. Macdonald, and Mr. Justice Cooper. Mr. Herries was received with a spectacular liaka by 160 members of the Ngatipuru tribe, anil in response to an address of welcome he outlined the Native policy of the Government on the lines of his Wanganui speech,, Mr. A. T, Ngata, on behalf of the Natives, promising to carefully consider the Minister's speech, and to forward a reply to' him. The hui will be continued for about a fortnight, and the discussion on affairs affecting the welfare of the'people is expected to commence to-morrow.
Mr. .Merries leaves Gisborne to-morrow for Tokomaru Bay ami Auckland, ami will arrive in the northern city on Sunday. ' ;
Dr. Pomare will remain in Gisborne till Sunday, and perhaps longer. Tlie Hon. \V. Frascr arrives here next Wednesday.
