HUTT & PETONE NEWS.

(From Our Special Correspondent.)' $ THE TRANSIT CO., LIMITED. Definite steps have been taken in regard to forming a company for the purpose of establishing a motor-bus service in Petone. It has been resolved to proceed with the formation of a company with a capital of ,£SOOO, in 5000 shares of il each, but it is not proposed to issue more than 2000 shares at present. At present over 6CO shares have been taken up, \ .Messrs. G. W. Lodder, A. Coles, 11. l'indiay, and li. C. Warnes have been elected" provisional directors. Messrs. Short and l-'raser will act as joint secretaries, while Mr. F. li. Petherick will act as the company's solicitor. The prospectus is to be issued shortly,

PETONE BAND. At a public meeting at Petone last evening (called to discuss the financial position of the Petone Municipal Band) it was decidcd to ask tho Mayor to call a meeting .to decide whether the band should disband or not. The band at present hos liabilities amounting to i! 120. The Mayor agreed to call a meeting of the citizens of Petone to be held next Monday night. A committee-, consisting of the Mayor, Councillor Brocklebank, Messrs. Hooper, Cooper, Kirkwood, and Hartly, were appointed to formulato n scheme to lay before the meeting, to assist tho band out of its present position. PETONE TECHNICAL SCHOOL. The first meeting of the newly-appoint-ed Petone Technical School Board' was held last evening. There were present tho Rev. Mr. Thomson and Messrs. Cox, M'Kenzie, Boots, Ilobbs, List, I'rueman, Cunliffe, and Castle (secretary). Tho members of, the board occupying positions of office during the period just passed wero reappointed.

It was resolved to ask Mr. Hope to again take up his position ou the board as representing the Petone Workshops. In answer to the communication from tho board to the Education Board that it had set up a committee to confer with one appointed by tho city board as to increased accommodation at tho school, the Education Board wrote stating that it had set up its committee and \vould meet it (the Petone body) on. March 27. Tho director is to form one of tho Petone committee for the purpose of explaining the position fully. A circular was* received from the Education Department asking the board to regard any free pupils attending the school and failing to attend drill as unsatisfactory. ' Tho chairman moved that tho letter be received,' and tho writer informed that it was not the board's,business to interfere in such n matter. After some discussion the motion was carried. The headmaster (Mr. J. H. Lynskey) reported that tho first quarter had opened well, with 135 pupils (40 paying and 95 free pupils). Somo of the classes are uncomfortably full, particularly in tho shorthand and typewriting class, where there, were 3G pupils on the roll, with seating accommodation for 80. Again, there were only five tyrawriters among the 30 pupils. The millinery class had started with 12 freo pupils, and 21 pupils in' the dressmaking class. -The' English and arithmetic class-also is a very largo one. He reported that Wilfred-'Blakely and Charles Pijier had obtained first year's electric wiremen's work, and that Horace Lusty, Leonard Pickering, and Roy liobson had jmssed in three subjects in the Senior Civil Service examinations. Tho wool-sorting class had made another, successful start. < HUTT PARK COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Hutt Park Committee was held last night. Permission was given St. James's Sunday School to use the park for their annual picnic. Mr. P. W. Cameron asked for permission to let his sheep remain on tho park for a wefk or two longer, as lie had 110 place to put them at present—Granted.'' Mr. S. T. Burridge, a member of tho committee, tendered his resignation, on the ground that: llo; is tendering for tho graziug rights on the Park.—Accepted with regret.'

Tho Hutt Valley Trotting Club, who wcro asked to place their proposals in writing,' ivlicn a deputation from the club waited upon tho committee, wrote stating that tho stewards of the club did not fool inclined to go to a lot of expense until the committee submits a definite fol-m of tender to work on. After discussion, it was resolved to ask the stewards of the club to meet the members of the committee on the ground. The chairman pointed out that six hundred loads of soil had been placed on the park for the making of hockey .grounds. A furtlicr fifty loads were required to complete five grounds, and ho (tho chairman) suggested that as tho credit balance of the committee only amounted to £52 lfis. 3d., the councils interested bo approached for a further grant of .£lO each to help the committee out of a difficulty until April, when return from the grounds will be coming in. This was agreed to,, and fifty extra loads are to be procured. MUNICIPAL TENDERS. The following tenders have been accepted by tho Petoue Borough Council for the ensuing year Carting, Messrs. King Brothers; general; ironmongery, Messrs.- Bornthorne, Wilsqn, and Co.; sanitary contract, Messrs. Maxwell and Co. / ■ UPPER HUTT TOWN BOARD. Tho fortnightly meeting oT the Upner Hutt Town Board was held on Monday evening. 'Present— Commissioners Webb (chairman), Bennington, Kemp, Quinn, and Robertson. The resignations of Commissioners Bengo. and Burrell were received with regret, and the by-election fixed for Tuesday, March 18. It was decided riot to grant a polling-booth at Wellington for the poll on Wednesday, March . 12, on the rating on unimproved values issue, or the aforesaid election of commissioners. Tho chairman.end tho waterworks engineer (Mr. George Laing-Mea-son)' were appointed a deputatio nto wait upon tho Hutt County Council and urge tho advisability of erecting a new. ferroconcrete structure over the Akatarawa River, the Town Board and Hutt County, contributing their share, and with Govern, ment subsidy thrown in.
