THE REFORM CAUSE.
SOUTH , WESTLAND MEETINGS. ' (By TelogTaph.—Special Correspondent.) Hokitika, March 4. In response to a cordial invitation, Mr. W. J. Jeffries, (chairman-of .the Westland branch of- the. $ew Zealand Pplitiqal Eeform League). recently paid a visit to South Westland. . , The first place visited was Harihari, and-the hall was well filled. Mr.. W. Searle was voted, to the chair.
Mr. Jeffries .received a cordial reception. He stated, inter alia, that he had bjen a Eeforrn man when the present Government party 'in the House only numbered 18. Jeffries spoke for aboutan hour, fully explaining the constitution of the Eeform League and generally espousing the cause ol clean, honest administration.
Mr. Geo. Soott Hcbinson moved;,-"That a sub-branch -of the Westland Political Eeform League be .formed at Harihari.".. ■Mr. S. Jamieson. secmwkd thfljnjfttipa, which was unanim<«sly-:con;ied, ; .'•t; .-<■!!,
. A largo number of . names, were then handed ill as members of the new' 1 sub. branch;-i. j- •: -,j.
On the following night in the Publio Hall, Wataroa, Mr. Jeffries addressed another meeting. Mr. J. Donovan was voted to the chair. In the course of his introductory speech, he stated that after 25 'years of so-called Liberalism the province south of Wataroa had steadily.gone back.
Mr. Jeffries spoke ; on similar lines as those at Harihari, and was listened to with attention and cordiality. Mr. J. Colke (Wataroa) then moved: "That a sub-branch of the league, to embrace Waiau and Okarito, be formed- at Wataroa." ) This was seconded by Mr. Norman Friend (Okarito), and - carried unanimously. . ,
At a-subsequent meeting Of the newlyformed branch,- Mr. Jas. Colke was elected president and chairman, and Mr; h Donovan secretary,. r In moving a'hearty vote of thanks to Mr. Jeffries, Mr. C. Upjohn complimented him on' Ims address, which was singularly free from personalities and irrelevancies. ■ The league, he thought, could do good work for Wostland.
Mr. M'Bride seconded the motion, and this concluded a successful-meeting.'
