THE BANDS AGGRIEVED.
: — ■ • ■ / . PREFERENCE TO TRAMWAY MEN. Tho latest possibility in the way of strikes in Wellington is a strike of bands. Their grievance is that they have not been fairly treated by the committee .in the arrangements for the Easter carnival. Tho Bandsmen's Committee in connection, with tho Eastef carnival .held a meeting in tho Mayor's room at .the Town Ilall last night, the following bands being representee!City, Jupp's, sth Regiment, Watersiders', and Pipe. In the absence of the Mayor and of the secretary of the Carnival Committee, Mr. A.'Baiter, of tho City Band, was appoint-' od chairman, and Mr. A.. Shaw, of the Pipe Band, noted as secretary. ' , . Tho following, resolution was carried unanimously; "The Relegates enter an emphatic protest against the chairman and secretary, ,of,, the Carnival Committee absenting. themselves • from this meeting, arranged by delegates. at a prior meeting."
. Every delegato camo to tho meeting reeiuested by the band to find out why the Tramways Band had been appointed to head the procession, and to play for tho Maypole at 12 noon and 4 p.m. on Saturday, when it. had been supposed that these things would bo arranged by the Bnnds Committee. In view of these "circumstances it was resolved: "That the delegates withdraw from taking any further part in the carnival function until such tune as a full explanation lias been given. .
lhe Tramways Band was not represented a .t the nieetins, and Mr. Shaw (who supplied the material for the foregoing report of the proceedings) 6tated that it had been dourly arranged with the Mayor, who is chairman of the Carnival Committee, and with the secretary, that i , ,-Hi am,va y s , Band representatives should be present to deal with- these matters.
