; *- Vice-Regal. His Excellency' the Governor and the Countess of Liverpool arrived in Auckland by the express yesterday morning to take tip their residence there for tho next few weeks. On Monday next the Governor will leave on a four of the, Whangarei and Bay of Islands districts, returning to Auckland on the following Saturday.
The Hon. A. L. Herdman is at Invcrcargill, the Hon. W. H. Ilerries and the Hon. Dr. Pomare in the East Coast district', and tho Hon. F. M. B. Fisher at Auckland. The Hon, H. D. Bell goes to Levin to-day, returning in the evening. The other Cabinet Ministers are in Wellington. Tho Hoii. W. Eraser will leave for the North Auckland district 011 Friday or Saturday.
Tho Hon, W. H. Herries visited the head of the Motu railway works yesterday and at night was entertained by the Gisbome Reform League. In the course of his remarks he paid a warm tribute to Mr. Itassey's leadership, sayine that as Primp Minister he had revealed a side of his character not disclosed when he was leader of the Opposition.—Press Association.
: Dr. Newman, M.P. for Wellington East, has been spending a .few days in tho Taranald district. Last week ho climbed Mount Egniont. Ho also visited the Bell Block (in company with Mr. H. J. H. Okey, M.P.) and inspected tho oil works at Moturoa.
Mr. T. D. Taylor, late of the "Fiji Times," has been appointed editor of the Ashburton "Guardian."
Captain W. Waller, who has resigned command of the Huddart-Parker steamer Wimmera, to become harbour master at New Plymouth, was with a dressing-case at Sydney last week by his fellow officers and the engineors of the ressel, -Mr. H. T. Drummond, chief officer, making the presentation.
Mr. D. C. Bates, Government Meteorologist, has declined an invitation to attend the International Maritime Meteorological and Storm Signal Conference to be held in Rome.
.Mr. John Forsyth Connelly,• an old and highly-esteemed resident of Auckland, died 011 Saturday, after a brief illness. The deceased gentleman, who was N<!w Zealand representative for AV. B. Peck and Company, of New York, was an expresident of the Auckland Commercial Travellers' Club, and was weU-knßwn throughout the Dominion in commercial circles. Arriving in the troublous days of 18G5, Mr. Connelly saw a great-deal of active service through the Maori War, in which he served as a lieutenant, making his home in Auckland when peace was restored. His death, which will be heard of with regret by a very wide circlo of friends, took place nt the age of 63 years, and he is survived by his widow and a grown-up family of four sons and six daughters. The funeral of Mrs. Ham and her infant son Sidney (victims of the Seatoun boating fatality) was largely . attended yesterday afternoon. Before the cortege loft for the. Knrori Cemetery a service was conducted in the Mortuary Chapel in Tarnnaki Street by the Ifev. W. Shirer, who also officiated at the graveside. Among those present wcro Mr. C. Helliwell (secretary to tho _ Wellington Gas Company), M}'. C. B. Norwood (manager of the fitting department), 'Mr. W.'H. Potter (who was rescued from drowning in the same accident), and others who ivero associated with tlio late Sir. and .Mrs. J[am on the staff of the Gas Company. Members of tlio Loyal Britannia Lodge of Oddfellows were also pres?nt. The town clerk (.Mr. ,1. I{. Palmer) is absent 011 holiday leave. His duties are being'carried out by the chief clerk (Mr. It. TaitJ. The Hon. 11. D. Bell goes to Levin today to open a horticultural show in that town, Tho Minister will return to Wellington to-morrow evening. Messrs. Frederick Townsend (of Townsem! and Paul), and John Castle (pharmacist) have decided to become candidates at. the coming City Council election. Mr. James Webster (of Messrs. Murray, Roberts 4nd Co.) had the misfortune to slip on tho Heretaunga golf links yesterday morning, and dislocate his right shoulder. '
Mr. Tlieo. Queree, well known in musical circles, leaves ior England and the Continent early next month, He will leave Wellington on April 6, and leave Auckland for London on April 10 by tlie Macedonia. When abroad Mr. Querea will visit his niece, Miss Ueiio Queree, who is perfecting her pianoforte studies under tho cyo of Madame Carrcno. Mr. Quereo will be away for eight months.
Mr. David Hudson, sen., who died recently at'Warepa, was in his ninety-second Ho was born in Kincardineshire, Scotland, m tho year 1821, and oamo to New Zealand in arriving in Wellington, where he stayed for a year or 80. . n. n wen t south as far as Cliristchurch and limaru. Among . the passengers to arrive from London yesterday l.y the Rualiine was Mr, Douglas Archibald Sinclair, a wellknown swimmer and orcliid-luinter, who intends to settle in New Plymouth; Mr. Sinclair was a member of the" Twickenham Swimming Club. Mr. William Henry lias taken advantage of Mr. Sinclair's journey to ask hiin to make certain inquiries into life-saving matters in Now Zealand on behalf of tho Royal Lifo Saving Society, The new-comer is a keen horticulturist and naturalist. It is not lonf since lie explored North Borneo for orchids, and hp has been.»oommisT:oned by Sir Marcus Samuel and the Hon. N. C. Rothschild to study the bird-life of tho Dominion. Mr. Sinclair is a sou of Mr. Archibald Sinclair (who is assistant editor of ths London "Referee"), one of tlio founders of the London Water Polo League, and vioe-prosident- of the Royal Life-Saving Society.
Mr. T. Griffiths, a retired shipowner from Scarborough, England, was a pas6engsr by tho Rnuhine to Wellington yesterday. Mr. Griffiths is mating the round trip in tho Ruahine.
Constable M'Kenzio, of Lower ilutt, who was recently promoted to tho rank of sergeant, and who is under transfer to Dunedin, leaves for the south on Tuesday next. It' is understood that Constable>o. Cameron, of Richmond, lias been appointed to take charge at Lower Hutt.
Last evening Mr. Robert Gibson, of l'etone, who recently retired' on superannuation from tho Petonc railway workshops, was tendered a social evening by members of the l'etone Working Men's Club. Mr. Gibson was the recipient of n purse of sovereigns. He Iraves on a trip to England in a few weeks' time.
