A number of tho competitors also fifed off in the "Judging Distance" Mulch, > Which, will continue during the week, tho scores in which are included in the computation for the sei'vice championship (individual). ,

Currie. of Dhui'it, with 99 points; runner-tip,' Sefgeant4lajor Montgomery, of JLlilnedin, with 98. y CAUSE AND EFFECT. . SMALL ENTRYs REDUCED PRIZES. 1 The D.R.A. prizes aro based on an estimated entry of 400 competitors for tho city fees aTe received with tho one hand as income, and handed out with tho other-hand 'as expenditure—i.e., prizemoney. The natural result of a feduced entry liat is tho reduced prize list, aild this little problem in D.R.A. arithmetic it was. Colonel Collinses painful duty to"' o'ipofln?l to the' cbiiprators' when they squadded for tho first parade yesterday morning. Last year, .he said, he had had to-out down the prize money on account of a greatly reduced entry, and this year he regretted to have to' say tho' pruning knife had to bft applied once again, for instead of a minimum entry of . 400 upon which tho prizo list was based, there had been received only a little over 350, Which mehnt, in Cash, a shortage in the D.R.A. revenuo of from <£150 to ,£2OO in.match fees alone. He had telegraphed to' Major-General Godley, who was then at GreyiftOuth, asking- whether, an additional grant to cover tho shortage would be allowed, and in reply the Commandant had fiiiid that he could not see his .way td accede to the request. The Executive Committee, therefore, had to reduce the prizes, by «£l6O. He made this statement the more regretfully in view of the fact "that in previous years it had been his pleasure, to add, not to deV duet from the prize-list. The reductions decided upon would affect the_ Belt, series' 1 "Bf matches. Instead of allowing fifty XI 'prizes and twenty 10s. prizes, for seniors and tyros "respectively, where provided in the programme, there would ( be provided forty Jil prizes for the seniors ten lOs. prizes for tho tyros. In the King's Prize Match, .£0 would bo deducted from , each of the first four prizes, and in the "special aggregates"—matches Nos. 10 and 11—the £1 prizes would bo reduced to 15s. According to the D.R.A. programme, the prize-money 'allocated on an estimated entry of 400 totals ,£1671 odd, but the actual amount of the entry money in sight) owing to the reduced entry, is only 1 about ,£IOSO.
. ON THE MOUNDS. V.' \ -—— ... NOTES ON THE SHOOTING, - A different spirit, a new "stir," was anpare'nt on the mounds yesterday, especially amongst tho older and more oonservativo nien. to whom tho advent of the Belt matches afforded a welcome relief from the. "silly" matches and "jumping jimmies" whioh occupied their attention last v/£ek. . . The Opening Match, a kind of preliminary trial for tho Belt matchcs, was of more than passing interest, as an indication. of championship form. The ranges were *300, 500, and 600 yards, seven shots at e&ch. Tho best effort at tho first Ttmge was made by Banks, of Kimbolton, who rattled on a possible (35); at sTloyds. he made a useful 33,' but at 600 yds. ho collapsed, registering 25 only. Sergeant Cox, Of Auckland, Sergeant Simmonds, of PictOjl, and Biflomau H. C. Russell, of iPetone, made 34 at 300 yds.' H'Calmont, ' of Opiiki, ma<lo a possible at 500 yds., while fete winner of tlio match, Curtio, of j Ohura, made a possible at Gioyd9. Otherwise tlio shooting could, not bo called brilliant, tho reason probably being that tho men on the mounds had just finished three days' shooting through open sights in the Service Hatches, and somehow seemed to,have got ."out of touch," as it were, with their aperture > sights , when they squinted through their peepholes lit the Opfcmng Match. In the Auckland Match, fired in a light 60u'-westerly breeze, with a hazy sky, the sh6oting improved, and two ten-shot possibles (50 points)—one by. Corporal Scanned, of tho 12th Regiment, <uid the other bv a tyro (Heald, of the Buapoliu Bifle Club)—were registered at 500 yards. E. J. King, of Opaki, tho winner of tlie match, made 49 at 300 yards, while another excellent score of 49 wiis mado lw Corporal Mticp, of the 11th Regiment, nt 500 yards, and by voung Cheeseman, of 'the -'Marlborough High School Cadets. M'Murray, of To Awamutu, also registered 49. . .
The 300 yards' rimgß of the match proved a Tegular pitfall for most of the competitors, many of whom, as they ruo!ully eyed their rnngo total, regretted that they had neglected 800 yards range practice during the season. It is ft curious thing that in nearly every rifle club's programme the 300 yards range has been ncglccted, if not altogether, at least almost altogether, until quite recently, ami therein the cue h<is been taken from the TJ.II.A. ■ programme. Moro attention is now being given to thfi 300 yards practice, but it is palpably from the results on tho Auckland Ilntch that sufficient practice is still a ir.atter for the future. Quite a number nf wellknown shots cuJlapSed badly at this rango in the Auckland Match, but madoa good recovery at 500 yds. The "rot'' at tho 300 yards range, however, was fatal lo the chancos of several prominent marßsmen in regard to tho prizo-list, and they lroked in vain for their names when the list lias posted up. . Young Dormer, jf (.lie Akarana Club, missed the possible (50) by one point at 500 yards, an excellent ef-
fort, but his score at 300 yds. was only 38. Ho was left out. Captain. Merrilces,' of Tauranga, who won tho servico championship last year, made -10 only at 300 yds., but made a good recovery with 47 at 500 yds. The veteran, Captain Dormer, of the Akarana Club, .made 33 at 300 yds., and 41 at 500 yds. Currie, of Ohura, who won the Opening Match earlier in the day, made a poor showing with 37 at'SOOyris.i hot managed' to get within three of the possible at 500 yds. Captain Richardson, the popular adjutant of the "Fifth," has not had much time for looking along the sights of his rifle this season— a little less than he has had for instructional duties with tho regiment, suffering as ho does from the same "clerical" complaint that afflicts Captain Wallingford in Auckland—got within i points of the possible . at 500 yds., but. his uiedest 36 at 300 yds. shut him hopelessly out of tho prize-list. Mosefield, of tho Sounds Club, one of tho best shots on the range, made 41 and 40 at the respective ranges. He has not yet struck form. An excellent score of 48 was made by Sergeant Simmonds, of Picton, at the 500 yds. range, but hi 3 10 shots at SObyds. yielded 40 only. Robinson, of Wainui, also' got within two of the possible at 500 yds., but his 39 at 300 yds. threw him out of the list. Letham, of Akarana, registered 49 with his ten shots at 500 yds., a splendid effort, but his 300 yds. shoot yielded 40 only, PRIZE LIST. AUCKLAND HATCH. 300 and 500 yards, ten shots, at figure targets. Results;-

Two New South Wales riflemen—President R. M'Alister and Captain Jameson (Australian Reserve) —both of the Juneo Rifle Club, and a Westralian marksman —Maingay, of thfr LyaUs Mills Riiie Club —are competing at Trentham 'this year. RIFLE CLUB CHIEFS. THEIR MEETING AND WANTS. The annual meeting of tho New Zealand Riflo Clubs' Association was held 011 tho range last evening, President H. Marshall, chairman of the executive, presiding over, an .attendauce of 200 odd. The annual report (the main points-of which'havo been published from timo to .time during the year) was rend and adopted. Tho balance-sheet disclosed a small credit balance of ,£4 lis. 2d. On the motion of President W. J.Welch (Opaki Riflo Club) the outgoing executive was re-elected. Speaking to the motion, President Welch eulogised the work which 'the executive had accomplished during tho year in furthering the interests ol riflemen and clubs generally. It was resolved that Presidents Masefield (Sounds) and Welch (Opaki), and Marshall (Karori) should be nominated for appointment as representatives of the riflo clubs on the executive of the Dominion Rifle Association. A proposal by Deputy-President Duthie (Christchurch Rifle Club) that area, group secretaries should be appointed by tho rifle clubs in their respective area groups to link up tho organisation of the rifle clubs throughout New Zealand was carried. Complaint was made with regard to tho delfiy in the issue of requisition forms and other departmental forms to rifle olubs,' and the consequent inconvenience caused ito riflo clubs.
On tho motion of Deputy-President Duthio (Christchurch) it wa3 resolved to recommend to the authorities the desirableness of investigalting the question of an insurance scheme to cover the markers on all' riflo club ranges. It was pointed out that the minimum premium was at present jfis. It pressed rather heavily on the smaller clubs.
The chairman moved: "That itho meeting of Tiflp club competitors expresses its appreciatTbn of Colonel Collins's efforts on behalf of rifio shooting, nnd of tho Dominion Rifle Asscintion, nnd hopes that ,ho will continue in his position as chief eieciitivS'officer of tho association' for many years to come.
