INCREASED PAY CAUSES A BOOM IN RECRUITING.
As a result .'of : the irecent wage concessions, a.boom'i'n naval recruiting'is .'reported, and the recruiting officers state . that the class of boys being,'attracted to the Navy ,is most satisfactory.At Portsmouth recruiting office ono, day.''recently there were one hundted and fifty applications, and reports from other centres, particularly London and the West, are equally significant-of. a desire, to tako advantage of the , increase' in wages, despite , the' faot that the 15 per cent, increase npon old rates does not" come to tho blue- ' jacket until he has reached the age of , 24. . There is little doubt that every lad who can pas 3 tho tests will be'accepted, as it is understood'that the next Estimates will provide, for an addition of 6000 men to the Navy. The Canadian , and Malay ships—four in all—havo. to bo manned; and it is, expected in Ports- , inouth that five capital ships, instead of four, will be laid down.. The provision of a free kit oh entering, thereby avoiding deductions • from pay for sevoral months, is a considerable, attraction to recruits.—"Daily. News." ' , .
