ON THE WATERFRONT.
BUILD NEW STORE? THE ESTIMATE CALLED FOR. A A new store is proposed for the waterfront at the northern end of Wellington's lino of wharves. At last night's meeting of the narbour Hoard tho chairman (.Mr. 1!. Fletcher) moved— • "That tho board favourably consider the question of tho erection of a store on the land lying along the waterfront between the King's Wharf and tho proposed I'ipitea Wharf. Ahd the engineer be instructed to prepare sketch plans and furnish an estimate of tho cost." In bringing the matter before, tho board, Mr. I'letcher. remarked that the land on which it was proposed the new building should bo erected was a valuable site, and could be put to much bettor use than at present, when it was merely a resting place for lumber. The store, which could be erected there, would bo about 275 ft. long, 74ft. wide, and 30ft. high, and would bo capable of accommodating GOOO dumps, or about, 5000 loose bales of wool. Tlio board had done remarkably well last season in handling the wool, bflt if they had had a shed of that ltin'd they could have 'jdone very much better. Mr. M. Cohen, in seconding the motion, considered that, a store of the description would be'of great service. Tho store might not bo necessary at all times, but in cases of emergency it would be needed. Tho board should not place itself in tlio position of having the head of the Railway Department telegraphing away to stations not to accept , any more goods for Weir lington on account of inability to handle them at this end. With the rapid developriieut of the country of which Wellington was the centre, Mr. Cohen could seo possibilities of a great expansion of trade, and the board should be ready forany bipergency. < . - - Sir. C. W. Jones, who supported the motion, expressed the opinion/that the board was not ahead of requirements. In fact, if anything, they were a little behind. Ho had felt for some time that they should push ahsad. Several other members approved of tho proposal in tho motion, which on being put to the meeting was carried unanimously. .
