Senor Arana, a director of the Putumayo Rubter Company, who is journeying to England, interviewed here/said that the rubber atrocities were grossly exaggerated. His enemies wishing to exploit the rubber were partly responsible fur the allegations. There were somo' cases of native ill-treatment, but for these he was not responsible. '
Sir Roger Casement, British Consul at Para, in his evidence before the House of Commons Committee set up to inquire into the Putumayo rubber scandals, declared that. Senor Arana, from whom the company purchased the business, visited the region . to' conccal crimes. : Senor Arana announced his intention of giving evidence before the Committee, and is now on his way for the purpose.
