"ENGLAND'S GLORIOUS FLAG."

STRIKING INCIDENT IN PARIS,

An interesting and striking incident was related on Tuesday at St. Patrick s Cathedral, Auckland, by the Rev. Father O'Dolierty when addressing • tho Holy Family Confraternity in his concluding address, the twelfth of the series, on -"The Church, and Stato in France." In 1900 tho lecturer was a student_at tho Irish College in Paris, and Mons. Rouvier was Prime Minister and was engaged m "carrying out tho decree of ."his prcdecessor in office, Mons. CoomljG, for tho sup* pression of tho religious orders. One night a wholesale raid was made by the military upon tho religious houses, and ■in the early morning the religious, and theiT students were ordered out from the seminaries and colleges. The Irisli Colle"o was left undisturbed.. While the students wero at breakfast the rector informed them of what had taken place during tho night and in the early morning in all tho religious houses in Pans. The cook at the Irish, College, who was a devout French Catholic, upon his own initiative went up to tho high story of tho college and hoisted upon the flag polo tho Union Jack. The French t authorities paused and then give the Irish rector throe months to quit. Instead of complying, the rector communicated with the British Government, and the latter at once informed tho French Government that the British residents must not bo molested until tho British authorities, were first made acquainted; of tho'facts. "This," said Father O Doherty, ended the matter, and everyono of us thanked God that' wo were under the protection of England's glorious -flag. — Auckland "Star."' ■
