DR. MORTIMER OF PHILADELPHIA.

' -WITHDRAWAL FROM THE . MINISTRY. Shortly beforo Christmas the Rov. Alfred G. Mortimer, D.D., resigned tho rectorship of St. Mark's Protestant Episcopal Church, Philadelphia, on the advice of tho Bishop of Pennsylvania (Dr. Rhinelander). Tho daily, papers printed sensational reports, and" devoted much space to tho subject, but they admitted that they were entirely ignorant of the true facts. Tho only rumour that has been explicitly denied is that Dr. Mortimer had gono over, or was to go over, to the Roman Catholic Church ; and tho only authoritative statement that has been made is the following from Bishop Rhinelander, published in the "Living Church" of January i:— : "It iB a fact that Dr. Mortimor has withdrawn from tho work of his ministry. This action, however,' was not the result of any trouble between him and his vestry nor in "consequence of any request on their part for his resignation. It followed upon a conference between himself and me, in which personal matters of serious moment were considered by us. After -the most careful reflection I counselled him to take the action which he afterwards took, and his-vestry approved the course." '
