NEW POSITION. ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT. Tho working of the Newtown car sheds recently forlned tho subject of a report from the Tramways Board of Managemerit to thci Tramways Committee of the J City Council, and this report was placed before councillors last night. Among other things tho report said:*-The carshed superintendent and the leading lianas have been interviewed' and questioned with'regard to methods -mid capability( and it is found that all of them are competent for the satisfactory carrying out of the duties assigned to them. . . . Tho board is of opinion that thero should bo an official actine as deputy or assistant to the car-shed superintendent, and is further of opinion that the most sab isfactory mata in tho establishment for this position *is J; WiiterS, at present employed as lending fitter. . . . Waters has, however, tendered. his resignation andpurposes leavii\f* for England' next month. He has stated his willingness to return if a satisfactory, appointment is available for him.' He also asks that in such event tho corporation should contribute to his expenses. -I " "The board is satisfied'that it would-bo advantageous-, to Wtftiu his eorvicos and his visit to' England may be taken as likely to increase his knowledge of carshed management. ' The: board recommends that oiv his return lie bo offered tho position of- assistant - car-shed superintendent, at a salary "of £220 per annum, and that his duties b& to geneynlly assist tho car-shed superintendent in such manner as tho lkttii: fchail direct, and his services to bo available at such hours as ■ may, in the- opinion of tho car-shed superintendent, bo-most, essential- for properly supervising tho work of this particular branch. In tho event of tho council deciding to contribute to Watcrs's expenses it sliould be distinctly on tho unwhatever sum is to bo paid, shall bo handed over on his return and again takinfe up 1 duty.' "Tho board is also of opinion that tho storekeeper at tho car-shed should bo under the control of the superintendent, instead of as at present'under tho control of tho storekeeper at head office.- . All traffic stores Bhould bo transferred to Thorndon Offices after tho wholo of the latter building is made available for the Department. 1 : The storekeeper at the car shed should observe tho samo regulation regarding holidays, etc., .as tho officials at this branch. ' •:

Zealand. After a good deal of discussion the - committee's recommendation whs agreed to on the voices.
